Chapter Fifteen

Morna had already returned from bringing her Uncle Hank his dinner when she heard a light knocking on the back door of the house. She knew it would be Nick, and rushed to let him in.

“Is Mr. Hunter here?” he asked before stepping inside.

“No,” she whispered. “Come in here before somebody sees you.” Morna closed the door behind him and then they kissed.

“I’ve got something important to talk to you about,” the boy said excitedly.

His excitement was contagious. “What is it? Tell me!” said she.

“I told my dad that I wanted to marry you.”

She wrapped her arms around him and kissed him on the neck. “You really meant it, then? You really want to get married?”

“Yes, Morna.”

“And what, what did your father say?”

“Well, he said I should go east and then send for you later. And he said I can pick any city back east I want to go to. He’ll pay for the trip, plus my expenses, till I get myself established.”

“That’s wonderful, Nick. I’m so happy for you, for us. How long do you think it will take before you can send for me?”

“Oh,” he said, puffing out his chest, “not very long. A few weeks. A month or two at most. And then we’ll be married.”

“Where will you go, Nick? Boston? New York? Philadelphia?”

“I don’t know. I hadn’t thought about it. Where would you like to live?”

“New York!”

“Then New York it is.”

“Oh, Nick! I can’t wait!”

“Well, it won’t be long. I’m going to pack tonight and leave on the early stage tomorrow morning.”

“Tomorrow morning?” said Morna, startled. “We have plans to make and things to discuss before you leave. Why do you have to go so soon?”

“Now isn’t that just like a woman? In one breath you say you can’t wait, and in the next you ask me why I’m leaving so soon.”

“But Nick, it’s so sudden. I didn’t think you’d leave like this. I thought there’d be letters you’d write to people in New York, that you’d arrange things before leaving, so that when you got there you wouldn’t be wasting a lot of time. And like I said, if we’re going to be married soon, there are a lot of things we should talk about.”

Nick was feeling uneasy. She was right. Letters should be written, by his father and by himself, to prospective employers back east before leaving. Why hadn’t he thought of that before? But that wasn’t the problem and he knew it.

“Morna,” said Nick, feeling somewhat ill at ease, “my dad wants me to leave tomorrow because he’s afraid of what Major Farrel and his men will do if they come here.”

“I see,” she said with a sudden coolness to her tone. “You figure that it’s okay to go and be safe while you leave behind the woman you’re going to marry. Very nice. I’ve heard about Farrel and his men and what they do to women. If even half of it is true, I’d kill myself before I’d let them touch me.
