Chapter 13

Revelations

Viral ran back into the candy cane territory, stopping only when he’d put a tall slope between himself and the adventurers. Conjuring a knife, he cut the strap which secured the gag in his mouth, the gag (which had likely saved his life) fell to the ground. Viral picked it up, and it disappeared into his pocket dimension. Hearing footsteps approaching, he dismissed the knife and conjured a dagger in each hand.

A one-armed gingerbread man and a life stalker rounded the slope. Viral relaxed, and a smile appeared on his face as he saw them, “My loyal followers: it is good to see you.”

Timmy approached and rubbed his misshapen scabby head against Viral's waist.

“How you’ve grown,” said Viral. “It seems adventurers' flesh is an ideal source of nutrition. I might just have to have Varney cook me up some after we defeat these adventurers, who presume themselves above me.”

Timmy stepped back as Viral kept speaking, “Of course, I’ll have to find that cowardly traitor first; he and Cane both will learn what happens when you choose cowardice over loyalty.”

Timmy nodded his head, licking his lips.

“They ran toward that purple mist, didn’t they?” continued Viral, “Well then, that’s where we’ll head; we’ll find those cowards and whip them into shape. Then, we’ll set up an ambush for when the adventurers come after us.”

Timmy nodded his head. Viral made eye contact with Timmy, “For your loyalty, I am appointing you as my new second in command.”

Timmy nodded again and Viral glanced at the Gingerbread Man, “I also value you and recognize your loyalty: I name you my third in command.”

The Gingerbread Man bowed his head.

“Now,” said Viral, “let’s go find those traitors.”
