Why Anyone

Can Do This

It’s So Freakin’ Easy, That’s Why

W e were the unlikeliest of vegans. We loved food and avoided deprivation like the plague. And let’s not forget to mention that Lisa is from the Jersey Shore, where pork roll (don’t ask) is a revered local dish—best when chased by zeppoles (fried dough balls, rolled in powdered sugar).

We relished omelets (extra cheese, please), pizza (extra cheese, please), and Ben & Jerry’s by the pint. When we started reading about the evils of animal products and their role in promoting heart disease, cancer, and other ills that plague the Western world, however, we began to question the whole pork-roll-and-zeppoles thing. Eventually, beef was out and beans were in.

Of course, there were some hardships at first. Lisa pined for cheese. Amy missed her homemade turkey meatballs. The smell of sausage sizzling in the morning still makes us salivate.

But honestly, the cravings dissipate and you find other things that not only satisfy, but also make you feel like a million bucks. When people ask what the biggest difference in how we feel is, we say “clean.” Our bodies feel cleansed, healthy, and energized—a far cry from the clogged-up heaviness we felt after pigging out on meat and dairy.

Here’s the skinny: we’re obsessed with eating. Diets are a drag. So if we can do this, anyone can. Anyone. And that means you!
