Chapter 24
Truth
As if someone was tapping her shoulder, Alana woke with a start. Probably her psychic sister playing one of those mini-mind-games again. The alarm clock on the nightstand read six oâclock. Just enough time to freshen up and change. She pulled a pair of black dress pants and a modest blouse from her closet, went into her bathroom. It had only taken a few minutes, and as she put a pair of jeans and light sweater into the laundry basket in her closet, a knock sounded on the door. Michael didnât stir as she let Thorn in.
He stood in the doorway as if not comfortable enough to enter.
She stared into his dark-gray eyes flecked with green. âHowâd he really do with you?â
âIâll take good care of him.â
âYouâre avoiding my question,â she said and touched his massive shoulder.
âGo to your meeting and take the kid with you. As for your soul mate, I know his immediate needs.â His chin jerked toward the bed. âHe canât have any loving looks shooting at him like Cupidâs arrows. I know how to handle him. Try not to be so concerned.â Loyalty was evident in his every whispered word.
They left the bedroom together as Miles and Celia came into the living room. Lukas trailed behind looking like he was in a sulk. As they moved away from the closed bedroom door, Michaelâs son leaned against it with his arms folded across his chest, his feet crossed as well. He wore a dark-blue shirt, which matched his eyes, and the new pair of khakiâs Celia forced on him at one of the shops in Pisa.
âI like the new look, especially the shirt,â Alana said to engage him.
âI want to see to my father,â came out in a nasty tone, complete with a glare aimed at Thorn as if Lukas were ready to fight.
âHeâs asleep.â
âI said I want to see to my father.â
Here we go again, she thought, recalling every stubborn scene during the shopping trip. Not only had she chased after Lukas for a few blocks, but more than once Celia had to cajole him into cooperation. And more often than not, her sweetness appeared not to work. And now, a truly ugly scene was about to unfold.
âOkay, come with me.â She moved toward the door, but Thorn stepped in her path giving a firm âNoâ, and in a flash Lukasâs fists were tight, his face even tighter.
It was time to intervene, and Thorn stared Lukas down. âYou can do something selfish like wake him, or you can go to church like a good little boy.â
âFuck off, demon. If you hurt him, Iâll killââ He had the kid by the arms, easily picking him up and plunking him down against the antique secretary, which was many feet away from the master bedroom. The feral look in Lukasâs eyes was nothing short of shocking. And as if held in place by an unseen force, no one else in the room moved or spoke.
âKid, you are way out of your league with me.
