12. Food Allergy?
Later, wide awake, I held Sharon, sleeping in my arms. I kissed her and started to get up.
Half asleep she asked. “You’re leaving. I thought you were taking some time off.”
“I am. But after a decade of nights—“
“I remember Hawaii. Take a walk. And, stay safe.”
“I will.”
I kissed her and rose.
“Hon, can you take the film to CVS?”
I answered with a kiss.

At the U.S. Bank Tower, Christian, nearly in human form, sitting alone, inclined, wings outstretched, drank a Miller Lite in serenity, while relaxing and enjoying the moment.
Adrian flew in to join him, carrying a bag containing two carry out meal containers and handed one to him.
“Yo, thanks Vamp.”
Happy, Christian opened his lunch. Shocked he asked, “Yo, bat. What’s this?!
“Sushi.”
“Adrian, I know what it is. Raw fish? You eat that?!”
“Yeah. It’s good.”
“Compared to what? Crickets? Moths?”
Adrian sighed and reached for a box. “It’s a good thing I have this. Here.” He handed the box to Christian.
Christian read the label, “Ritz crackers?”
“Everything’s better that sits on a Ritz.”
Christian placed a piece of Sushi on a Ritz Cracker, then making a variety of grimacing faces attempted to bite it.
Adrian glanced up at a fast moving object approaching their realm and Christian’s eyes followed his.
Adrian wondered aloud, “What is it?”
“Salvation.”
“What?”
“The new guy.”
I flew in and landed, not quite gracefully, but approaching it.
Adrian walked to me, “Hey, Steve.”
“Hi Adrian. Christian”. In unison we all hissed and averted our gazes.
And, Christian walked to me holding his lunch, “Welcome. Like Sushi?”
“Raw fish? Gross.”
“I knew I liked you for a reason.”
“More for me.” Adrian took Christian’s Sushi.
“You are a godsend Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
I was confused. “For what?”
“Nothing. Sit have a beer.”
Adrian handed me a beer.
“Thank you.” I took it and sat and we laughed and talked like we’d known each other all our lives including deaths and rebirths.
We fell into a comfortable silence and after a while I asked them a thought that had been troubling me for a while. “Let me ask you a question.”
Adrian nodded, “Sure.”
“I’ve been having the weirdest thing—things happening to me.”
Christian grinned, “Weirder than waking up one night covered in blood with a severe allergy to sunlight?”
“Within the context.”
Curious, Adrian spurred me on, “Go ahead.”
“My neighbor—“ before I could complete the sentence a look of horror crossed their faces.
Adrian stood, “A woman?”
“Yes.”
Christian watched me with great concern, “Would calling her hypersexual be an understatement like calling Godzilla a lizard?”
“Yes.”
Adrian came closer, “Did you get hit by a psychic burst from her?”
“Yeah. Some kind of a blue energy.”
Christian with even greater concern asked, “Did you find yourself entranced saying something like,” He extended his arms and as in the same trance I was in induced by Ella, he said, “Laura Maria Leticia Guadaulpe Esmerelda Patricia Sanchez Arias, my love.”
“Yes.”
Sad for me and the two of them, Christian said, “Oh, Steve.”
Adrian echoed his emotions, “Steve.’
Then the two hung their heads in silence.
Adrian sighed, “La Belle Dam Sans Merci.”
I told him, “I don’t speak French.”
Christian explained, “You have been “enthralled”.
