Reflections
With ragged breaths, Ryan began that dayâs session with Doctor Hollins. âSo, what shall we discuss today Susan? Is there more you would like me to tell you of Mr Hogart? Iâd so like to discuss it again, his death gave me such, liberation,â with his arms flailing wildly in the air, he continued, âsuch animation of my darkness. Please dear Susan, let me tell you.â
âMy boy, you know how I enjoy our conversations and I do so love hearing of your progress. The beautiful death of Mr Hogart was the making of you Ryan but alas my topics for today do not include him. Instead I want to talk to you about the man you are now, for it is clear to me you are no longer a boy. You are unique.â
Ryan felt something swell inside him, she thought of him as a Man.
As in the first time they met, he found himself lost listening to her talk, her words enchanted and entranced him. Between her thumb and first finger she twiddled a silver rabbit pendant on a necklace that she wore, until he found himself mesmerised and the real world slipped away. A clicking sound snapped him out of the trance and he could not for a minute recall the conversation.
âNow it is time to look towards your future, our future, together. You may recall when we first met, I talked to you of taking on only the very best? Perhaps you thought I merely eluded to my clients? You are right in one respect. I will only work with the exceptional, those who truly have talent. Your extraordinary progress has prompted me to consider you for a special role, you are such a man Ryan. As a gifted child, I fear you already have too many roles to play but it is my job to guide you, to bring out your potential. I believe you are ready. Therefore, I must ask one more role of you. You will need to cast away all superfluous things even your own desires. Are you ready, Ryan? Truly ready?â
âYes, tell me what can I do? Anything, you know Iâll do anything for you Susan.â
âFrom this moment on, you must control your own cravings and desires. Undertaking an expedition, a becoming, emerging as a soldier, with forensic precision under my guidance, accepting my orders as commands you will obey. Building a code to live by, one to guarantee your anonymity and continue your journey, you will become my instrument and together we will do great things.â
A single yellow daffodil petal, lost its fight for life, departing the elegant vase which had been its temporary coffin and floated silently to the surface of the desk as Doctor Hollins smiled, letting her hand drop once more to his knee.
Susan stared into the darkly pools of Ryanâs mysterious eyes. Something exquisitely bipolar about them, dead and alive at the same time. âForgive me Ryan, if what I say next offends you but I am obligated to reveal, to allow the dark monster inside of you to emerge.
