After the daily chores were done, Noah helped set up for their softball game. As he pushed aside the picnic tables and placed old textbooks where the bases should be, he felt like he was actually at summer camp.

He felt a twinge of guilt, too. He always felt that guilt whenever they had downtime or let themselves have a little fun. Back when he was on the road with Taylor and Jacob, he was always on edge. There was no time to let his guard down or indulge in unnecessary games. Every moment was life or death; every moment was about survival. Even now, as he watched William step up to home plate with the plastic softball bat in hand, a little voice in his head told him that danger was lurking nearby. That he should be catching fish at the lake or hunting in the woods or watching the gate for any sign of intruders.

“You’re looking a little tense,” Lola said. He stood with her on second base. Max was holding up the game, complaining to the umpire about the previous play.

“Sorry,” Noah said. “I’m just getting used to all this. There’s freakin’ zombies outside, but we’re in here playing softball.”

“What’s survival if we’re not living a little?”

Noah ruminated on her words as the game continued on. Live a little, Noah. Wasn’t this what he wanted for Taylor and Jacob? A sense of normalcy? A sense of community? He let himself relax, chuckling when William jokingly threw his bat to the ground after he struck out.

Noah stepped up to the hula hoop—a.k.a. their pitcher’s mound. He was warming up his pitching arm just as Tommy walked from the cabin. Lola was sitting this next game out, and Tommy joined her at the edge of the field where a small audience had gathered. She beamed, giving his shoulders a squeeze. He shrunk away from her affection, but Lola didn’t seem to take it personally.

“Look who’s joining us!” Max exclaimed. He was at home plate warming up his swing. “Finally out of your cave. Good job, Tommy.”

Jesus, this guy was obnoxious. When he wasn’t following Andrew around like a lapdog, he jumped on any chance to tease Tommy. It was grating on Noah’s patience.

“You ready?” Noah asked. “We’re waiting.”

“You wanna play, Tom?”

“No,” Tommy said.

“Huh?” Max cupped a hand around his ear. “Speak up.”

“I said no.”

“Back off, Max,” Lola said.

“What? I’m just making sure he feels included. It’ll be fun. You ever thrown a ball? Hell, have you ever ran a lap—”

“Max,” Noah said. “Batter up or we’re not finishing before dark.”

“All right, big boy.”

“Don’t ever call me that again.”

Max grinned and got into his stance. Noah wound his arm back and threw the ball as hard as he could. It hit Max right in the gut. He fell to his knees, clutching his abdomen and groaning in pain. Elena rushed over to him, making sure he was okay. Maybe Noah had gone too far, but the satisfaction of seeing Max doubled over was just too glorious.
