Chapter Six

Gray

TWO-THIRDS OF GRAY’S attention was on fixing a great meal and ensuring the twins were comfortable when they finally arrived. The rest focused entirely on whether Scottie showed up or not. It would tell him everything he needed to know about the man.

Is he genuinely interested? Am I? Are the glimpses of the man underneath the blustering punk actually there? Is that ass as delectable as it looks in jeans?

Important questions.

His cottage smelled good enough to eat. The prime rib had been simmering in the oven for hours. Its aroma combined with that of the garlic mashed potatoes and prosciutto-wrapped asparagus. Salty, delicious goodness. His mouth watered just thinking about sitting down to the meal.

He snagged a thin slice of prosciutto to shove in his mouth. Fuck, that’s good shit. He grabbed a second piece just to make sure it tasted all right. Never hurts to double-check.

Cooking had always been a passion of Gray’s. If life had been different, he might’ve gone to culinary school and followed another path entirely. If, if, if. He hated the word—had often mercilessly ridden the cadets in his charge during his drill instructor days when they used it in his presence.

Aside from the obvious religious horseshit, Gray found the holidays annoying because they made him far too introspective. He wanted the past to stay where it belonged. With any luck, he’d forget everything in the blur of getting older.

I hope so. I could lose my entire twenties without really regretting it. How the hell does the Hamster deal with having perfect recall? I’d drown myself in a river if I remembered every detail of each moment of my life.

Gray crouched down to check on the meat roasting away in the oven. He figured another hour, and it would be perfectly succulent. “Fuck. I’m hungry.”

A rough bang on his front door jolted him out of daydreams of juicy beef. Gray knew a knock from the twins would’ve been relatively timid, likely almost inaudible. Well, well, well. Scottie had decided to show up.

Gray pressed his lips together to avoid barking out a laugh at the almost petulant pout on Scottie’s face. He stood on the front stoop with his arms folded across his chest, foot tapping a rapid beat while his jaw clenched tightly. “I see you’re eager enough to show up early. I’d have pegged you for showing up late and fuck everyone else’s timetable.”

“I can leave.” Scottie cocked his head to the side with his eyes turned anywhere but on Gray. “Not even sure why I fucking came.”

“Yes, you are. Get your ass inside.” Gray turned around and strode purposefully back into his home. He didn’t bother checking to see if Scottie followed—he would. “Did Santa bring you everything you wanted?”

“Never seen the jolly wanker in my life.” Scottie stepped into the kitchen with him, moving across to lean against the cabinets farthest away from Gray. “Where are the A-twins?”

“On their way, according to the text I got earlier.” Gray grabbed the handle of the frying pan to flip the onions he’d been sautéing for the sauce to go with the beef.
