They gather in the canteen with a strange buzz of energy from being allowed to grab a coffee before drill and stare in awe at the astonishing weather outside.
âThat is fucking biblical,â Nick says at the rain lashing the windows.
âItâs worse than yesterday,â Cookey says as the bolt lightning returns, scarring their retinas.
âNeed a hand, Miss Prior?â Clarence asks quietly, moving in to Paulaâs side as she works at the coffee machine.
âWhy thank you, Mr Madden,â she says, looking up at him as Maddox walks by with a gag.
âI actually need therapy.â
âWhatâs up with him?â Paula asks as Clarence bumps her side, making her giggle as he pours milk into a jug to start steaming.
Maddox turns away as Reggie walks in while still tapping at his stumps. âYouâre doing that all the time, Reggie. Are you developing a tic?â
âI am not developing a tic, Mr Doku. I am a man of science,â Reginald says as Tappy appears at Maddoxâs side.
âIâve gotta ask. Why was your pen outside?â
âWhy were you in the workshop so late?â he counters with what he thinks is a smart response.
âCos we were having sex,â she says bluntly, and Maddox blinks from the unexpected answer as Dave marches into the canteen and calls for attention in his drill-sergeant voice, thereby bringing instant silence, with even the thunder thinking maybe it should be quiet for a bit.
âI found these in the offices,â Dave announces, holding up a pair of knickers. âKeep your kit in your bags. It is not hygienic to leave used underwear around.â
âWhy is everyone looking at me?â Marcy asks. âTheyâre not mine!â she adds to a second of silence as the dots are connected because Dave always does the third watch, which means he followed Clarence, who did his watch with Paula, and if the knickers donât belong to Marcyâ¦
âOh shit,â Paula says with a wince as Marcy swivels on the spot to stare at her and Clarence blushing furiously.
âYou had sex!â Marcy calls with an excited handclap as Paula yelps.
âTactical retreat,â Clarence says while ushering Paula into the kitchen through the swinging door.
âOh, this is so good!â Marcy says and sets off running, with Tappy rushing behind her, thinking the mystery of Maddox and the pen can do one. Charlie hesitates for a second. Trying to be prim and proper and not to get drawn into gossip.
âScrew that,â she says and sets off after them, bundling through the swinging door that swings back the other way a second later, with the very large and very red-faced form of Clarence holding a jug of frothed milk being pushed out by Marcy and Tappy.
The door swings shut, and Clarence turns back to see everyone else staring at him. âAnd?â he asks, trying to be big and menacing.
âSo, itâs close then,â Nick says innocently, nodding at the sky with a smooth set up for Cookey.
âThey were last night. Ba-dum-tss⦠I thank you.â
âCookey!â Clarence says in a warning growl.
âI meant the thunder and lightning,â Cookey says as Clarence glowers at him.
