She was firm in her decision, her resolve strong. Dr. Pritchard had made arrangements for her to re-enter the hospital the next morning, she said. The doctor didn’t seem surprised that she had called. She had the impression that he expected to hear from her.

Her explanation was a catharsis. Samantha felt drained when she finished. Bryson was moved; he put his arms around her in consolation. She was doing the right thing, he said. Samantha pulled away; she didn’t want to be coddled. But she kissed him on the cheek, warmed that he understood. Her decision was now irrevocable.

Bryson offered to spend the evening with her, but Samantha insisted she wanted to get a good night’s sleep. Would she be all right? Samantha assured him that she would. Her conviction about her ability to proceed with the abortion was absolute. Bryson wanted to drive her to the hospital in the morning, but she demurred. Her actions, like her decision, were to be hers alone.

She walked home contentedly. Her stomach had settled; she even had an appetite. A week before, she had been on the same threshold. Then, her decision had been reactionary, an impulsive reflex to what Bryson had told her about the baby. Now it was fully thought out. She had struggled, and she had conquered. She would surrender her will to no one. She loved Bryson more than ever for letting her make the choice. Soon she was back at her apartment again.

Jon and me, she thought. It had a nice sound to it. She could hardly believe that it was really happening. She wished that he were there right then, wanting him more than ever.

Samantha took a bottle of Beaujolais from her wooden wine rack and uncorked it. It was time to celebrate. The effect of alcohol on her pregnancy no longer concerned her. She poured herself a glassful and took a long draught. It was mellow, satisfying.

Her apartment was sunny and warm. She lowered the shades and turned on the air conditioner. She unbuttoned her blouse and wiggled out of her jeans, leaving her clothes in a pile on the floor. To hell with the wash. Right now she wanted to relax and unwind.

She finished her first glass of wine and poured herself another. The wine made her languorous. She turned on the tub water and drew herself a cool bath. While the tub was filling, she gazed at her reflection in the minor.

A slight tan remained from her week at the beach one month ago. Samantha was proud of her figure. Her flesh was firm, the muscles toned. She cupped both her breasts, weighing each in her palm. The nipples hardened. Her breasts had no sag or bounce, standing straight and erect. A shiver ran through her; she pursed her lips and sucked in breath. She put her hand on her pubis, below the swell of her abdomen, and rubbed the mons with her fingertips. With the flat of her other palm she made small circles against her breasts, flicking at the nipples with her thumb.
