WILLOW WAS TOO ANGRY to return to Brooklyn’s. She texted her to let her know she’d pop in on Sunday again and went to her own condo.

She’d come to the conclusion on the way home that men are bastards—the whole lot of them. The feelings inside her confused her. It was more than anger . . . she was disappointed.

The connection she’d made with the Phantom that night had been a surprise, especially in light of her feelings for Michael. But, she’d decided to embrace the things he’d made her feel. It had felt real over the past two weeks of telephone conversations. He’d made her feel desired and wanted. He was the first man she’d been comfortable with, to talk about herself.

“A farce, the bastard. That’s all it was. I’m such a pushover. I should’ve known it was too good to be true,” she scoffed. The anger began rising again and she dug the phone out of her bag when it started ringing. She answered without checking who it was.

“Willow Roth.”

“I don’t care about Hadley, his cars or the race, Willow. It’s you I want and I’m not going to give up.”

She ended the call, ignoring the rush of excitement through her veins.

“What a fucked-up situation. I’ve not had a man in my life for years and now there are two. One, who made it clear he doesn’t want me and the other, who does.

A derisive snort echoed through the room, her voice acerbic and wry at the same time.

“Such a pity. Both of them are lecherous Neanderthals with no interest in anything real, but fucking all the willing pussies they can find.”

Michael, she’d already decided to put behind her. He’d made it clear he had no interest in a wife and children and apart from that, she wouldn’t be able to trust him. She would constantly wonder between whose thighs he was delving in.

John Sutton, never mind the unexplained attraction she felt for him, was no different.

“Yep, Willow. It’s time to move on. Now that Michael Hadley has fallen off the pedestal you’d placed him on for all these years, you’ll be able to find someone who can make life worth living.”

She heard her words echo around her, but her heart somehow didn’t seem to be as eager to move on as her mind was. Willow sighed. It was no use denying that she loved Michael; she had for as long as she could remember. What used to be an infatuation had grown into a ‘once in a lifetime’ kind of love; deep, special and something to be nurtured. It wasn’t going to be all that easy to forget about him and move on.
