Scarlett refuses to see Eleanor, and every time she tries, a piece of her heart burns with grief. She’s playing it cool, but we can all tell she’s suffering immensely from the burning rage that Scarlett is displaying.

Olivia finds us in the sitting room, her face drawn and pale. Leo hands her a glass of wine, which she takes with a watery smile and sinks into the couch with a groan.

“Letty’s asleep now. Poor little thing cried herself to sleep.” Olivia tells us, missing Eleanor’s flinch as if she’d been whipped.

“Is she… okay?” Eleanor’s voice comes out thin and reedy. Luckily, Olivia notices and scoots herself over to sit on her other side, placing a hand on her arm.

“Listen. Yeah, she’s fucking hurt and angry that you’ve kept it from her all these years, but she doesn’t understand you had no choice about the matter. To her, you hung the moon, and knowing this has changed everything. But,” Olivia wipes the stray tear falling down Eleanor’s cheek, “it will get better. Children have such massive emotions, and they feel them so intensely that tomorrow she will be more rational, or at least more willing to hear from you.”

Who knew Olivia could be so wise?

“Yes, thank you, Aaron. Sometimes I can have moments of wisdom,” she snaps, and I realize I said that out loud.

I don’t apologize, but instead, stand up and tug Eleanor with me, bracing her against my side when she sags slightly. I help her up the stairs, where she stops briefly to hover outside Scarlett’s door, but I tug her into our room, helping her to undress, and then I spend the night holding her, stroking her until her breathing evens out and her face relaxes in sleep. This time it’s my turn to remain awake, planning all routes and ways to take my brother down while watching the darkness of night seep into the dusky pinks of dawn, which makes way for the sunlight.

Our door creaks open, and I stiffen when Scarlett’s exhausted face peers into our room. I give her what I hope is a reassuring smile, gesturing for her to wait, and ease out of the bed, trying to be careful and not jostle Eleanor. It would do her so much good to sleep in some more.

“I’m hungry and didn’t want to go downstairs on my own,” she tells me in a small voice. I’m only in sweatpants, so I throw on an old top and stay by her side as she grabs the handrail to make her way down the steps slowly.

My hand drifts out of its own accord to take hold of hers and guide her down, but pull back at the last minute. This needs to go at her pace and I really don’t want to startle her. When we reach the kitchen, I help her onto the stool at the breakfast bar. “Okay. What do you fancy eating? I can do anything as long as it’s cereal.”

She giggles, shaking her head, “I want the pancakes from yesterday.
