Chapter Twelve
Ty knew he was in trouble when he couldn’t get Lainey off his mind three days after seeing her at the diner. He was going through withdrawal.
This had never happened to him before. And he didn’t like it.
Like, every time the front door of the house opened, he quickly ran to see who it was—unfortunately it was either Mrs. Busby, one of the nurses, Dean, or Cade. When a car drove down the road, he’d stop and check to see if it was her old Volkswagen. But no, it wasn’t Lainey.
She’d sent dinner with Mrs. Busby, and he knew why. Their kiss in the kitchen had already confirmed what he knew the night they’d kissed in the street—their attraction was explosive.
As much as he knew they couldn’t just have one night together—because he had a suspicion it wouldn’t be enough—he was rethinking not getting involved with her at all. Maybe if they set up some kind of guidelines so no one would get hurt—well, so she wouldn’t, really. He knew enough about himself to know that he wasn’t the kind of guy to fall in love, not the kind of love she would want, anyway. He hadn’t been able to feel like that since his mom died. Probably never would again.
But that didn’t mean they couldn’t sleep together. As long as they were very clear about expectations, because the last thing he’d want was to hurt her. The more he thought about it, the more he realized it could work.
He needed to go see her. He knew she’d be at the diner.
He stood near his truck, his muscles tightening as he spotted Cade striding toward him like he had a bone to pick. Nothing new. His house had become a battleground, and he didn’t see how he’d ever become friends with the guy who had tried to take his place in his father’s life.
“Tyler,” he called out.
Ty leaned against his truck, folding his arms across his chest, pretending like Cade’s angry stomping wasn’t threatening. “Yeah?”
“I want to talk to you about Lainey,” he said, slowing as he approached him.
Ty stiffened, standing a little straighter. “What do you want to talk about?”
“I noticed you’ve been hanging around her.”
Ty shrugged, not liking where this was headed. “What is this? Middle school?”
Cade didn’t like that, because his jaw muscle started ticking. “Stay away from her.”
Everything inside him stilled. “What did you just say?”
Cade took a step toward him, his eyes narrowed. Growing up, Cade had always been the roughest of the three of them. But he couldn’t say that anymore. Ty had been on his own for years without a dime, hanging with some not-so-reputable people. He knew how to protect himself, and he knew how to be prepared when he was threatened.
“I said stay away from Lainey because she hasn’t had an easy life. She’s a good person, and she doesn’t need you messing things up for her.”
Ty leaned a little closer to his once–best friend. “And what? I’m a bad
