Out on the property, the sisters were standing on the front porch of Mabelâs house. There was a rucksack at Jewellâs feet and a nine-millimeter tucked in the hip of her jeans.
Jewell had showered and had her hair pulled back in a ponytail. She was wearing a black T-shirt and shades and she was as skinny as everâall knobby knees and elbows as she handed Lucy one of their fatherâs gummies.
Lucy chewed tentatively at first, but was able to manage and washed the gummy down with a small gulp of water from Jewellâs canteen.
âI washed yours out, too,â said Jewell. âItâs on the kitchen counter. Iâll snag it for you here in a minute. We should probably head out.â
Lucy handed back the canteen. âYou know this is ridiculous, right? Hauling me to the cabin like this.â
âI know itâs a pain, but I think itâs a good idea.â
âIt might be a good idea for you, but Iâm not the one who set a boat on fire.â
âI need to tell you something else, and if you still donât think the cabin is necessary after that, Iâm fine with you staying here.â
âThereâs something you havenât told me?â
âIâm afraid there is.â
âWhy am I not surprised?â
Jewell looked at her sister. It was such a strange thing to consider, let alone say out loud. It didnât seem real yet, and maybe it never would. In some ways, that strangeness was what allowed her to say it at allâbecause it was still a surprise to her it felt less like a confession.
âVan is dead.â
âWhat?â
âVan,â said Jewell. âHe died.â
âWhat do you mean, he died?â
âApparently, he was on the boat when I burned it.â
âWhat do you mean, apparently?â
âHe was on the boat,â said Jewell. âIt is apparent.â
âHe died in the fire?â
âActually, he committed suicide and then I burned the body, unknowingly. So itâs gone from an arson to a potential murder situation.â
âA murder situation?â
âYes.â
âMurders arenât situations, Jewell. Theyâre fucking murders.â
âI didnât kill him, though. It just looks like I might have. Iâm actually a victim here, in a way.â
âSo he got drunk and passed out and you set the boat on fire with him inside, but didnât know it?â
âNo, he killed himself. Heâs trying to get the insurance money for Franklin so he set me up to make it look like a murder. Insurance doesnât pay on suicide.â
âHow do you know thatâs what happened?â
âBecause he apologized for it.â
âFor what?â
âFor everything. For stiffing me on the money and setting me up. He sent a note up here this morning with the Shipley boy.â
âWhereâs the note?â
âDad has it.â
âDad knows?â
âDad is the one that figured it out.â
âWhy didnât he tell me?â
âI donât know,â she said. âHe probably thought you knew.â
âI would have said something to him if I knew! I wouldnât have just not mentioned a fucking murder!â
âThere again, thatâs just not how I prefer to frame it.â
âHe has to keep that note. To show the cops. Thatâs evidence.â
âI wish it were, but it just says IâM SORRY.â
âIâm sorry?â
âYes. All caps.â
âItâs his handwriting, though, right?â
âHe printed it.
