Chapter Twelve

Mackenzie couldn’t quite explain what drove her forward. Talking to Willow wasn’t part of her job description. She was only hired to assess Landon’s mental state at the time of the crime.

Still, she couldn’t let this go. Something about it gripped her. Something deeper demanded answers.

During the drive to the seaside town where Willow now lived, Mackenzie thought about what this could mean for the case, and how much these words would be worth.

She wondered if Willow was even going to be open to sharing the truth with her. She wasn’t sure what to expect at all.

These thoughts kept her company until the coast came into view. Deep, alternating shades of blue contrasted against light grains of sand with colorful shops popping up along the streets.

The sun was especially bright that day, highlighting all the cheer the coastal town had to offer.

Mackenzie could understand why Willow moved here. Even just driving through made her feel happier and at peace. She was even more delighted when she pulled up to the charming café.

The shop was in bright shades of blue, green, white, and silver which gave it a beach vibe. The white and blue tile floors were glazed with glitter while cute, quirky ocean-themed décor graced the walls.

She found a light green table for two with a view of the ocean and waited for Willow to join her.

As time ticked by, Mackenzie became worried that Willow would bail. She waited anxiously, her eyes stayed fixed to the door. Her hope rose each time it opened and sunk every time someone who wasn’t Willow walked in.

About twenty minutes after they had agreed to meet though, Willow walked through the door. She glanced over the café and seemed surprised to see Mackenzie still waiting for her. She walked to the table in a hurry.

“Sorry I’m late,” Willow said. Her cheeks were pink as she blushed, bright against her pale skin.

Her sun-streaked hair fell in waves around her deep-blue eyes, surely beautiful though there seemed to be pain hidden beneath. “I was honestly unsure about coming.”

“I empathize with that,” Mackenzie replied. “I’m sure this is a difficult topic for you to revisit. I’m just glad you did come. I’ve been looking forward to speaking with you.”

“I’ve been thinking about it a lot,” Willow replied. “When you first reached out, it caught me off guard. I put a lot of thought into my response, and I’ve put a lot of thought into what I’ve decided to tell you today. But first, let’s order some food and coffee. I’m starving.”

Mackenzie had already looked over the menu, so as Willow decided what she was going to order, Mackenzie discreetly watched her as she fiddled with her bracelet, her eyes frequently glancing around the café.

Once they had placed their orders, Willow’s gaze met Mackenzie’s. She took a deep breath and stopped fidgeting, centering herself.

“So, why did you ask to meet with me?” Willow asked. “I know it has to do with what happened, but what exactly do
