Chapter 14

Lucia sat on the bench, so many emotions clambering for attention in her mind. She needed to be alone with her thoughts. Declan was going to testify against her father, and his testimony would be the thing that would put him and all the men in her family behind bars for years. He’d never told her the full extent of her father’s empire or how deeply he was involved, and while she knew it was to protect her, it still hurt. The idea that the FBI could decide his testimony was usable and take Declan away filled her with terror and dread, but he would presumably have to go back to the States to testify. She needed to think, and for the hundredth time since all this happened, she wished she could talk to her father. He’d always been a listening ear and a source of sound advice her whole life; the idea that she had to go it alone from now on without him, and that she and Declan would be the reason for that, left her in an emotional spin. She should hate him, and she did, but the part of her that loved him couldn’t be turned off like a switch. He had tried to marry her off to Antonio to prove a point to his business associates, but she believed in her heart that if she’d said she didn’t want Antonio, then he would have called it all off. Or would he? It was impossible to tell now.

The old Lucia would have been sure but now that she knew what she knew, she couldn’t be sure. She wished she could think more clearly. She knew it was impossible, but she longed to speak to him, just the two of them, alone. Would he really kill her as Declan thought he would? She just couldn’t believe it, though all the evidence suggested he was much more the man Declan knew him to be than the fantasy she had created. But it wasn’t a fantasy, she argued with herself, he was really her dad, he really loved her, they were really close. If only she could see him, she’d know for sure. She gazed up into the clear sky as dusk was enveloping the idyllic scene of mountains and lakes. A dog barked, children squealed with delight as they played with water pistols on the hotel lawn, life just going on. Never before in her entire life had she wanted to just get away, from everyone and everything, but she did now.

Declan walked over and sat beside her.

‘I know you wanted to be alone, but I just wanted to check you were ok. George is checking in with the legal people again, with the new evidence, and he’ll get back to us… I’ll go back inside if you’d rather.’

‘I know why you didn’t tell me, I do, but to hear you say it, heroin. Somehow the other stuff, the girls and the racketeering, were not ok, of course not, but kind of what he inherited.
