Chapter 14
Haze.
Beeping.
Antiseptic.
My eyes opened a crack.
Oh God … not the hospital again. What happened?
"Jenny?"
A face hovered over me. It was Dr. Williams.
Detective Coalfield stepped into view.
"Detective?" I asked numbly, "What happened?"
"You were shot, but luckily, the bullet just grazed your temple. I rode in the ambulance with you," he said, his face a mask of anguish. "You could have died! I told you not to follow them!"
"I'm sorry," I said defiantly. "But I couldn't just let that creep take her. I needed to stop him."
He shook his head, clearly disappointed in me.
I sighed. "I guess I didn't do such a good job, huh?"
"You're a kid," he said simply. "There was nothing you could have done to stop him. The guy had a gun."
"What happened?" I asked. "I remember the man driving off with Callie, but I don't know what happened after that. I must have passed out."
"He shot you," he said weakly, "And he was aiming to kill. The bullet grazed your temple. We found it next to the staircase. The lab is doing an analysis on it. I still can't believe you ran after them!"
"It's okay. I'm not really hurt. But I wasn't going to stand by and do nothing," I said. And it was true. I didn't think I could've let that man take Callie away without trying to follow them.
"Can you describe him for me? And maybe give a description of his car?"
"I'll try. He was pretty covered up." I gave him the best description I could and he jotted everything down in his notebook.
"Now, how did you meet up with them in the first place?" he asked. "It blows my mind that he took his victim to the mall, of all places."
"I was shopping for an audition outfit. I saw two people on the other side of the store. They were wearing parkas, baseball caps, and sunglasses. But the really weird thing is, he pulled her over to the security camera, took off her cap and glasses and let the camera get a full view of her."
"What?" he asked in disbelief.
"Yeah, I know! Why would he do that?"
He thought for a moment and then answered, "Because he wanted us to know he had her, and that she was still alive."
"Whoa. Couldn't he have just let her talk on the phone to the police or her parents? Why did he bring her out in public? Seems too risky to me."
"Because he's a smug bastard. He was showing off. Some criminals are like that. They like to think they are more clever than the police," he answered wryly.
I winced as the doctor cleaned the side my face with alcohol. He patted it dry and covered the wound with a bandage.
"Your parents are on their way over here," Dr. Williams said. "But don't worry, you are just fine. We've already checked you out. You can go home as soon as they get here."
He walked toward the door. "This is the last time I want to see you here, okay?"
"Oh God," I said realizing the impact of Dr.
