Alex read through the letter twice. He’d had a sleepless night, and unfortunately, in the late hours, he’d discovered feelings for Tabitha that he felt had no place in his mind. He’d done his best to root them out.

But now she wanted friendship.

Could he manage to be friends with Tabitha and not cross the line? He had to.

Dressing for the gym, he picked up the phone and called Tabitha’s room. She sounded groggy, not like her usual self. “Tabitha? Are you all right?”

“I’m fine. I overslept.”

“I was going to go work out before breakfast. Want to join me?”

“No, not this morning. I—I’ll meet you in the coffee shop for breakfast in an hour.”

“Okay,” Alex said. Then, after drawing a deep breath, he said, “I appreciated your letter. I don’t see any need to make a change now. Do you?”

“No, of course not, as long as you’re okay,” she said slowly.

“Yeah. I’ll see you at breakfast.” And he hung up the phone.

It was the first day on the entire tour that she hadn’t worked out. He frowned, knowing that meant she was still worried about the tour. But he vowed to himself he wouldn’t be the problem. He’d settled everything in his mind. If friendship was what she wanted, friendship was what she’d get.

He was five minutes early to breakfast, anxiously waiting for Tabitha. When he saw her get out of the elevator, he breathed a sigh of relief.

“How are you feeling?” he asked at once.

“A little sluggish. I missed working out.”

“I missed you being there. I like the companionship.”

She smiled, but it wasn’t the brightest smile he’d ever seen.

“We can work out tonight when we come back for dinner. Two workouts a day won’t hurt me.” He waited anxiously for her response.

“You wouldn’t have to join me.”

He stared at her, trying to read her feelings, but she showed nothing.

“We’ll see how I feel then. We’ve got a busy day ahead of us.” He knew they had a radio interview and two signings.

“Yes, of course.” She ate her breakfast and paid the bill. “Ready?”

He nodded. He shouldn’t expect too much. At least she was willing to continue the tour with him. It would be unsettling to change publicists now, he told himself. He and Tabitha would manage just fine.

A week later, they landed in New York City.

“Shouldn’t this be the end of the tour?” Alex asked wearily as they got off the plane.

“Ordinarily, but Mona wanted you to have full exposure. We still have Philadelphia, Washington D.C., Charlotte, Miami and Atlanta. Then we go home.”

“Right,” Alex said, straightening his shoulders and carrying his laptop through the airport, trying to look energetic.

“We don’t have anything scheduled this evening, so we can have a leisurely dinner. Or we can take in a Broadway musical if you want. Or I mean, you can. You may have friends here, or…or something.”

“No, no friends. You like Broadway musicals?”

“Yes. They always seem so…so happy, so courageous. Facing the world with a song.”

He grabbed their luggage off the carousel.
