The drawing, Plate XXIII, was made with a broad-pointed BB lead pencil, and is one of the first sketches for some of the figures in my painting of a “ Salvation Army Refuge,” which I painted in 1891, and which was purchased by the National Gallery, Melbourne. This sketch, drawn in a Whitechapel “ Shelter,” was produced under trying conditions, owing to a particularly attractive “ Lassie ” pouring her abjurations into one ear and a beggar gnawing a bone at the other. I trust the fervour of her prayers was reflected in the picture.
