Chapter 9

The group met outside the College of Magic. They had realized why Axeon said the afternoon instead of the morning when they awoke with heads hurting from all the festivities from the previous night. Marcus was saying his goodbyes to Maree while tending to her head. Vos and Velt sat on their wagon and waved farewell to the rest as they headed down the road to the front gate. Axeon pulled up in a carriage pulled by horses, but there was no driver in sight. The carriage door opened on its own, waiting for Xavier and Maree to enter. Maree hugged Marcus goodbye one last time, touching his face with her hand as she pulled away, before turning to enter the carriage. Xavier entered after Maree, and they were off.

The carriage proceeded through the gate, turning on its own as it exited. Maree was resting her eyes, still half asleep after a long night. Xavier watched a distracted Axeon, who hadn’t noticed the Sword staring. The sorcerer seemed different compared to his usual self. He had a look of concern on his face as he peered out the carriage window, or perhaps it was fear. This Axeon had the look of an elf that was unsure of his actions and questioned every move, quite different from the joyous wizard that exuded confidence and seemed to have every move planned out. He was quiet, which was a first for Xavier, having seen him enjoy talking quite a lot. Suddenly, he turned to the Sword and, as if he had placed an unseen mask on, the sorcerer Xavier knew returned.

“We should be arriving at our next destination by nightfall,” Axeon informed him.

“To meet your tracker?” asked Xavier. “Who’s this person we’ll be working with?”

“He’s a dwarf named Arden,” replied Axeon.

Maree sat up and opened her eyes wide after hearing the dwarf’s name.

Marcus went to Rory’s room to see him before he left the school. He wanted to thank him for all his help in showing him around one last time. He also wanted to exchange the first of many letters they had discussed last night. They decided that they would keep in touch, writing from time to time about their progression in their new adventures. Rory’s room was empty when Marcus opened the door. He asked a few fellow students if they knew when he left, but they did not know. Most of the gold collars were just now leaving, but there were some that had left earlier, and Marcus thought Rory must have been one of them. He did think it was odd that they said they would speak one last time and had not. As Marcus walked down the hall, he saw the old instructor from the courtyard and was hesitant to ask but decided to anyway.

“Excuse me, sir,” said Marcus.

“That’s professor to you, young elf,” corrected the old wizard. “You’re already starting off on the wrong foot.”

“My apologies, professor,” said Marcus, looking down and fiddling with the letter nervously.
