Chapter Thirty-Seven

Lola

“You look so amazing.” Alistair repeats for a third time as I try and fix my hair again. He had said it when I arrived to his rooms. He had said it again when I changed my hair from its bun to a plait and now once again when I was going for a high ponytail instead.

“Thank you.” I smile softly into his mirror. The green silk dress is gorgeous and comfortable. It slides across my skin smoothly and doesn’t ruffle up at my thighs. It’s a perfect dress. It’s sad that I may get blood on it.

“This may not ever be an issue for you.” I begin my first vampire lesson of the night. “But when you’re hunting it’s easier to have your hair back or up. It’s harder to get blood in it that way. Dried blood is so awkward to wash out completely. If you love those clothes, then I would change. Your first time is going to be messy.”

Alistair nodded along as I spoke, his reflection in the corner of the mirror that I was using. I redo my ponytail as I catch sight of a small bubble of hair at the top of my head. Perfection isn’t a look that can be achieved, I know that now, but I want to be as close as possible. It is easier to weed out the true animals that way.

“I’m gonna be near you the whole time, okay? Maybe not always at your side so people don’t think we are dating. It will be harder to hunt for us that way. People get less open with their creepiness if they think a big strong man is there to protect us. But we should come up with a word you can say so I know to come straight to you in case anything happens. Any suggestions?”

I was talking a mile a minute, but Alistair didn’t seem to care. He just sat on the edge of his bed, rubbing his hands together and nodding. He was listening. He was almost over-listening, but the fact he was even trying to listen was a nice change.

“It should probably be something easy to say in conversation right?” Alistair mused. “In case someone hears. It’s gonna be kinda weird if I just yell out ‘pineapple.’”

“We all have super hearing, Al. You won’t have to yell.” I remind him, fighting back a smile as I apply a pale gloss to my lips. I shut the gloss with a soft click and place it back in my jacket pocket. I use my vamp speed to go to the door to remind Alistair that he had that too. He is by my side before I can even blink.

We share a grin before racing each other down to the main stairwell of the living quarters. The palace was set up strangely. Half of the castle was lived in by servants and the royals and the other half was fully set up as a public area for balls, feasts, ceremonies, etc.
