âWhat do ya want?â she demanded.
âI need medical attention.â
âDoes this look like a hospital?â She squinted. âWait a minute. Donât I know you?â
âWe met earlier at the lake.â
âYouâre that fella with the gold.â
âThatâs right.â
She glanced down at his blood-stained trousers.
âYou ainât gonna die on me, are you? Cause, I ainât got no way of buryinâ a man your size.â
âI assure you I have no plans of dying tonight.â
âI sâppose you ainât got no more of that gold neither.â
He shook his head. âIâm afraid not.â
âI warned ya, didnât I?â
âYou did.â
She leaned around and looked past him into the night.
âThat pretty lady ainât with ya no more?â
âNo.â
âWhat about your dog?â
âI believe the people who shot me took him.â
âWell,â she said, her brow furrowing, âyouâve had yourself a real shitty night, hadnât ya?â
Mason sighed. âI believe thatâs a fair assessment.â
Ira swung open the door, shooing back several cats with her foot.
âWell come on. I ainât got all night.â
Mason tossed aside the walking stick and hobbled inside.
The interior of the church had been gutted front to back. There remained only a single set of pews, and those had been pushed against the far wall with perhaps thirty cats lying sprawled across their seats. The remainder of the church space had been converted into an apartment of sorts, with a kitchen table and chairs, a recliner, and a king-sized mattress placed on the floor. Clothes lay scattered about, many of which had cats napping upon them.
Ira helped him over to the table.
âTake off your shirt and pants and get up on the table so I can have me a look.â
Mason did as she instructed.
Ira put on a pair of reading glasses and leaned in close to study the bullet hole.
âYa got shot, all right.â
âYou donât say.â
âWho done it?â
âThat partâs still to be determined.â
She leaned him one way and then the other to better see the entrance and exit wounds.
âIt went all the way through. Thatâs good âcause there ainât no way Iâm fishinâ out a bullet.â She bent down and lined her eyes up with the bulletâs trajectory. âIt looks like it missed the bone too. Thatâs good, real good.â A cat hopped onto the table, and Ira shooed him off, saying, âGet now.â
âDo you think you can clean the wounds and stitch me up?â
âWhat kinda question is that? âCourse I can. Just got to find a needle and thread.â She stood up and placed a hand on his back. âDonât go nowhere.â
Ira disappeared into the back room of the church, leaving Mason alone with cats mewing at him from every direction. When she finally returned, she was holding a needle and thread, a white rag, and a bottle of Fireball Cinnamon Whisky.
âYou like cats?â she said, setting the items atop the table.
Mason thought of Gunsmoke, the kitten he had rescued from a brutal gunfighting competition.
âSure, cats are fine.â
âBut youâre more of a dog person, ainât ya?â she said, removing the cap from the whiskey and taking a short swig.
âI have a dog, if thatâs what you mean.
