“So do you still intend to take action and deal with that abominable camp in this swamp?” Lady Audrey asked. We were walking down the well-worn path to the plantation house.

“As Sinjin keeps telling me, we still need to work out a viable plan,” Bete Noire replied, giving me a critical glance. “Either way, we’re going to help. There’s no way I could ever make myself turn away from this torture and suffering.”

“May I assume, Mademoiselle Chevalier, that you too harbor some compelling reasons to participate in this matter?” I asked in a casual tone.

Audrey shrugged. “Let us just say, monsieur, that I do sympathize with the prisoners’ situation and I will help with any decisive action.”

“And we can count on your brother to feel the same?” my little hellion inquired.

“Mais oui, Bryn. He would never—”

A cry of agony suddenly rent the air, cutting our conversation short. My human stomach dropped like an anvil at the unpleasant sound. For one admittedly foolish moment, I prayed to the powers of Darkness, hoping that I was mistaken. I did not want to know the identity of the voice I just heard. But his second cry left no room for my vain doubt… It was Damek.
