Chapter Twenty-Nine
Things moved fast for Jack Noble after that.
The boys in the cast got asked to appear on the Johnny Carson show. When they all showed up for the afternoon taping, there were throngs of girls lined up against the barrier, screaming at them. The majority of the screams were for Jack.
“Hell, we’re the freaking Beatles,” one of the other boys said.
“Relax, we’re not even the freaking Monkees,” Jack said.
When they got to the green room, a production assistant came in with a clipboard. “Here’s how we want you sitting in relation to Johnny.”
When larger groups visited the Tonight Show, they sat in two rows. The front row was prime real estate, but the seat next to Johnny was most coveted.
The boys craned their necks to see where they fell. Jack was put right next to the great man himself.
The other boys stared at Jack, but didn’t say anything. The lineup was a harsh reality of their standing on the show, and everyone had to admit who the leader of the pack was.
They walked into the bright lights to lively applause and a few scattered screams from young girls who had managed to snag tickets to the taping. It wasn’t Beatlemania, but it was a good response.
The boys sat in their assigned seats and Johnny seemed amused by the response to these four boys he had never heard of until that very day.
Johnny adjusted his tie in a characteristic gesture, then raised a hand to quiet the audience.
“Welcome, although you don’t need to hear that from me. These girls seem ready to welcome you themselves.”
Another round of adolescent screaming, while the boys beamed at them.
Johnny glanced at a card on his desk. “I don’t mean to be confrontational, but some critics are saying you’re just a knockoff of Welcome Back, Kotter.”
A round of booing sounded from several corners of the audience and Johnny pretended to be caught off guard by the reaction.
Jack leaned forward and said, “With all due respect, Mr. Carson, up your nose with a rubber hose.”
Johnny looked confused, but Ed McMahon said “Heyo!” then explained that was what the Sweathogs said on Welcome Back, Kotter.
“But,” Johnny said, “don’t you have some sort of insult on your show?”
“The critics seem to think it’s our whole show that’s the insult.”
Several of the other boys in the cast rolled their eyes, and Ed loosed another ‘Heyo,” but the audience laughed.
Johnny looked at Jack with some slight, newfound respect. He nodded. “That’s very good, then. You’re quick.”
“All teenage boys are quick,” Jack said with a wink at the crowd, and laughter erupted from all ages in the audience.
“So I’ve heard,” Johnny mumbled.
