Leonardo’s notebook sketch of the first known parachute concept — {{PD-1923}}

Fun Fact

In 2000, almost 500 years after Leonardo’s death, a London-based skydiver proved that Leonardo’s design for the parachute actually worked. Adrian Nicholas slowly drifted one-and-a-half miles down from a hot-air balloon, strapped to a version of the parachute sketched in Leonardo’s notebooks.75

Surrounded by death and disease, the 35-year-old artist looked upwards and outwards to escape the harsh realities of life. His renewed interest in his personal notebooks and the new fascination with science and theoretical engineering developed alongside his painting skills. Although his sketches and personal ruminations didn’t immediately translate to money or prestige, Leonardo knew that a Renaissance artist always needed to develop new and better skills. The world was ever-changing and only those able to adapt to the times would come out on top.
