LAUREN

It’s just past midnight and I’ve been lying here awake since Steven and Hannah got home. Hannah came into my room to check on me, but I pretended to be asleep. I had to, so she’d be available to Steven.

I knew he’d tried to seduce her, especially after I had her wear that red dress. Steven loves the color red on a woman, and that dress fit Hannah perfectly. When he saw her in it, he couldn’t take his eyes off her. I knew she’d be in his bed tonight.

He thinks I don’t know. He’s always thought that, which is why he’s been unfaithful to me for our entire marriage. That, and because it was so easy for him to hide it. He’d say he had to work late or travel for business and I—as his doting wife who’s completely dependent on his income for the lifestyle I’d become accustomed to—had no choice but to be okay with him not coming home.

Sometimes I wonder how many more women like me are out there? How many wives look the other way while their husband cheats? I never thought I’d be one of them. When Steven and I got married, I thought I’d beat the odds. I’d found the one husband who was extremely handsome, highly successful, and yet still faithful to me. It’s hard to believe I was ever that stupid, especially after seeing my mother’s mistakes with men.

At least I had enough sense to include that clause in the prenup that said if Steven was ever unfaithful, the prenup would no longer be valid. I didn’t want to believe he’d cheat on me, but I had enough evidence of him being flirtatious with other women that I thought I better be safe than sorry.

Steven insisted on the prenup to protect his premarital assets, which were surprisingly substantial for someone his age. He’d received a big inheritance when his parents died, and with his uncle’s investment help, he grew that money to a very large sum. He considered that his money, not mine. He didn’t want me getting even a penny of it if we ever divorced.

When he gave me the prenup, I didn’t want to sign it. Steven assured me I’d still come out ahead financially if we divorced, saying I’d get half of whatever money he made during our marriage. But what if our marriage only lasted a couple years? I’d get almost nothing. So I insisted on adding that clause. Steven fought me over it, to the point I thought he’d call off the wedding. But then one day, without explanation, he agreed to it.

It’s time for that clause to finally pay off. If I was ever going to catch Steven cheating, it’s now. I invited a beautiful young woman into our home who looks strikingly similar to me at that age. I dressed her up in a way Steven would like. And I let them spend time together. I even encouraged it.

As for Hannah, I made her question if I’m a good enough wife for Steven, lowering her resistance to him.
