CHAPTER SIX

As the weak March sunlight rose behind the buildings, Coben spotted fresh oil on the road. They had been walking for nearly two hours, but hadn’t made it that far. The oil was fresh. Teddy had driven this way.

He was crouched in the middle of the road, rubbing his soiled fingers and thumb together in a circle. “He hit a kerb during his escape,” he said. “We all saw that, right? Must have punched a hole in something vital.”

“Karma,” said Liam, running a hand over the top of his rifle as though it were a pet. “He’s probably broken down by now.”

“If that’s the case,” said Aaron, “then perhaps we should try to follow the trail. It might lead us right to him.”

Cameron nodded. “Aye, and then I can get me hands on the wee shithouse.”

Aaron shook his head and sighed. “We can find Teddy and see what was going through his head when he screwed us over.”

Coben straightened up, knees clicking. “I might be able to patch the van up if all that’s wrong is an oil leak. We could be back on the road again by this afternoon.”

“I would prefer that,” said Fiona. “Even going out of our way, it’ll still save us time in the long run.”

Gavin grinned. “I want another road trip.”

Liam rubbed his little brother’s large, round shoulders. “It was pretty fun yesterday, huh? I take it your vote is to reclaim the van?”

Gavin nodded.

“Okay then,” said Aaron. “Let’s follow the oil leak, if we can. Maybe we can repair both the van and our relationship with Teddy. He’s one of us, right? We shouldn’t just forget about him.”

Cameron grunted. His shaved red hair was growing out, making him look fluffy and a little less hardened. “Ye English will send me loopy with all ye bloody feelings. All right, fine, let’s go find Teddy-boy so we can forgive him and smother him in kisses.”

Sophie nudged Cameron and smiled. “Don’t worry. We’ll let you rough him up a bit before we ever forgive him.”

Cameron actually beamed at that. It left Aaron wondering if the big Scot could ever turn on him for any reason.

No, because I would never do what Teddy has done. Part of the reason I want to catch up to him is because I need to know what the hell he was thinking, because right now it makes no sense. How could he screw us over like this? We’re family. All we have is each other.

Teddy warned me he was only out for himself. I should’ve listened.

The group tracked the leaking oil for several miles, losing the trail now and then but always finding it again later down the road. It seemed too easy, a stroke of miraculous fortune that Teddy had hopped a kerb during his escape, and that they had fallen upon the oil slick almost as soon as the sun had risen. If they’d taken a different road when they’d first set off before dawn, they might have lost Teddy forever.
