Chapter Fifteen

Two days later, in late afternoon, we arrived at Netherfield Park.

It was a bittersweet homecoming. I could never have imagined that I would come back to Hertfordshire without my sisters, in particular without Jane by my side. Yet here I was, tucked warmly inside Mr. Darcy’s luxuriant carriage. The grandeur of Lord Nolland’s and my fiancé’s carriages attracted much attention. I felt like a queen in a procession, with the handsome prince on my arm. Still, I would much rather have gone back in time, to be just plain Elizabeth Bennet, the favourite daughter of Mr. Bennet of Longbourn.

I wanted to go through Papa’s papers immediately, but Uncle Gardiner said I looked too tired and banished me to rest. It was not until the next day that I was able to go to Meryton with the gentlemen and assist in the detailed investigative work of trying to discover whether there were any French references in Father’s documents.

“Here are the papers,” Uncle Phillips said, and laid them out. There were several boxes. Mr. Darcy, Uncle Gardiner and I worked on a few of them while Uncle Phillips checked another. Mr. Bingley, in the meantime, had left early that morning for Scarborough to interview young Horace. Lord Nolland had stayed at Netherfield Park, while we ventured to Uncle Phillips’ office. He did not want to cause too much speculation, which would likely happen if he were to grace the office of a country lawyer.

There were many papers to go through, and so the morning was spent in silence and concentration. It was not until the middle of the afternoon that Uncle Phillips cried out with excitement. “Here is a letter in French!”

We put our heads together and looked at the letter.
