Georgia ran out of the kitchen, into the dining area, where Linda was about to attack her sister. As soon as Linda had shouted, ‘Oi!’ she’d looked over and had seen her sister about to be attacked by the angry client. With a bit of luck, Olivia would be able to talk Linda down with her sweet and kind nature; but if not, Georgia had to be there to help her.

The look on Linda’s face told her everything she needed to know: she wasn’t angry about the piece of crust; Linda just wanted a fight with one of the Belles. She ran over. “Don’t threaten my sister,” she said, stepping forwards and standing eye to eye with Linda. From what she’d heard Linda say to Olivia just now, she had worked for the Bellevue Estate. “We can work this out, Linda, please.”

“And there’s the other one,” sneered Linda. “You Belles, you’re all the same. I’m glad your dad’s dead, the bastard!”

Without thinking Georgia pushed Linda, hard. As if in slow motion, the client fell backwards and hit the back of her head on the edge of a table with an almighty clonk. Georgia’s heart stopped for two whole seconds.

“Georgie, what the hell have you done?” Nick cried, his mouth wide open in horror. He dumped some dirty plates on an empty table and rushed over to help the unconscious Linda. Worried clients, including Harry, who’d been sat at the same table as Linda, gathered around her and Olivia, watching Nick assess the situation. “Berny, phone for an ambulance, please.”

When Nick looked up at her with disappointed eyes, Georgia looked down at the floor. She’d only meant to push the acidic woman, not make her hit her head on the table.

“What the hell were you thinking?” asked Nick. She watched him check for a pulse.

“She was about to hit Livvy,” she replied, “and she said she’s glad Daddy died.”

“That’s not what I saw,” said Bernadette. “Georgie just started on Linda for no reason.”

Georgia, incensed, made a move for Bernadette, but there was a table between them. “You lying bitch!”

She felt Olivia’s arm pull her back. “No, Georgie, don’t,” pleaded Olivia. “She’s not worth it.”

Nick, getting angrier by the second, looked back up at Georgia, then Harry. “Is this true, Harry? Did Georgie push Linda unprovoked?”

Harry lowered his head but didn’t say anything.

“Please, Nick, Berny’s lying,” said Georgia. “She’s never liked me, you know that. Here, let me help with Linda.”

Nick put his hand up to prevent her from joining him. “I think you’ve done enough damage for one day, don’t you? I thought you were a mature woman, but you’re clearly not mature enough to know you can’t solve all your problems with violence. Get out!”

“But Nick, please.”

“Get out! And you, too, Livvy,” shouted Nick, not looking at them.

Georgia felt that lump at the back of her throat again, trying to strangle her. She saw the satisfied look on Bernadette’s smug face. She badly wanted to punch her. Instead, she ran through the worried crowd of onlookers, barging past.
