Chapter 14

AMBUSH!

Chip quivered. Had he heard that? Had he heard the thump of boots, their sound softened by overgrown grass that brushed against their soles? Or had it only been a sudden gust of wind? His doubt dissolved before his eyes: He saw them—troops in gleaming-black full-body suits of armour—advancing closer, sweeping towards the village’s central clearing like bees to honey. Before Chip could alert anyone, the ping-ping of discharged energy split the air.

“AMBUSH!!” Isaac shouted. “AMBUSH!! AMBUSH!! All around us!” He ducked, dodging a red blast aimed at his head, and returned in kind. Their own troops turned simultaneously and scanned for targets among the ruined huts.

In a matter of moments, the clearing was transformed into a battlefield. Chip crouched, shielding his ears and eyes with his handpaws, as it all raged around him. He couldn’t move; he had no weapon. What could he do?

Isaac approached him, pivoting between the cover of half-destroyed huts, while firing back at the wave of attackers. Reaching Chip, he muttered, “Those beasts must’ve taken out our boundary guards before they could alert us. But”—he spun round and shot his rifle in the direction of the enemy—“you must go. Get help before it’s too late. I can’t spare anyone else.”

Numbness stretched over Chip; he could barely hear Isaac.

Isaac shook his shoulders and shouted, “Go!! Go!” breaking through his haze of shock. “Now!! Run for that gap!”

Senses regained, Chip returned sluggishly to his footpaws. His body wanted otherwise, to stay on the ground and cower, but Chip knew he couldn’t allow his fear to hold him down. Isaac was right: He had to get help.

While Isaac charged back into the fight, Chip turned away and hurried into the wreckage of the village. He heard Isaac’s booming voice rallying his force behind him on several occasions as he squeezed down narrow paths and scrambled over collapsed walls, his fear making him faster. Would they survive the ambush? If it was likely, why would Isaac tell him so urgently to go? Paralysed screams distracted his thoughts, adding to the sounds of battle that tormented him. He again cupped his handpaws over his ears, dulling their wicked echoes, and kept on going through disfigured doorways and abandoned huts. When he passed through and exited yet another hut, however, he froze, hearing that almost-silent thump again.

Heartbeats later, Chip could hear them surrounding him. Two followed him through the hut while a third blocked off his escape at the end of the hut’s garden. Unlike so many times back in Rust, there was no Saga to come to his rescue this time. Chip staggered into a corner and crawled to the ground, quivering. High fences that enclosed the garden on both sides ensured that he was trapped, cutting off any hope he could possibly have of escape. Convinced they were about to capture him, a storm of tears swelled in his eyes.

Until another sound emerged. Chip glanced up. The three Granite Guard troopers only heard it as the newcomer came
