We shall soon see that the narrator and his Muse, Satire, may have quite different opinions about their story and how it should be told. On repeated occasions, they embark on more or less heated discussions on this topic, a skirmish that in fact colours all three levels of the frame story.

When Martianus now turns to his reader, he emphasizes his actual toil with pen and paper or, more correctly, quill and papyrus. If, at the second story level, he reads aloud from one or more scrolls that he is “unfolding” (in accordance with the literal understanding of explicabo suggested above), at this third level he rather appears as a writer, filling column after column, pagina, of a scroll, emphatically aware of the importance of finishing his work in time.599 Thus the author enacts the writing of his work – its expansion across his scroll(s) – within the work itself (2.219 – 20):

Ac ni rosetis purpuraret culmina

Aurora primo <et> convenustans halitu

surgens fenestras dissecaret lumine,

adhuc iugata compararet pagina

quocumque ducta largiorem circulum.

nunc ergo mythos terminatur; infiunt

artes libelli qui sequentes asserent.

nam fruge vera omne fictum dimovent

et disciplinas annotabunt sobrias

pro parte multa nec vetabunt ludicra.

habes quid instet, si potestas caelitum

faveantque Musae et chelys Latoia.
