Chapter 18

Lilly rested her wrists on the rail and gazed out over the ocean. The surf sparkled in the sun. A gorgeous day. No regrets—her last-minute decision to visit the pier was a good one. It wasn’t really a date. Drawing a deep breath of moist salt air, she reveled in the beauty of the day. The blue-green waves crashed through the weathered pilings below, unfurling and turning to foam where they met the sand. Would Cam show? It had been three weeks since the poker party. And another two weeks before she replaced her phone—not that it mattered—she’d lost Cam’s card anyway, so she hadn’t confirmed.

She remembered his deep voice asking, “Do you raise every hand?” with a saucy smile. It would be nice to see him again, but she wouldn’t be disappointed if he didn’t show—either way, it was a beautiful day. A good day to wear her white halter-top sundress with the fuchsia-colored flowers. She smiled; okay, maybe she’d be a little disappointed.

Brightly colored umbrellas and towels filled the beach, the people drawn to the ocean by the sunshine. Only the bravest ventured into the surf; while it was officially spring, the water was still cold.

Lilly turned, her eyes flashing over the crowd on the pier. It was second nature, watching her back. Locals and tourists milled about. Here to shop, people watch, eat at the restaurants, and take their children on rides and to the arcade. High-pitched squeals and laughter floated on the air, coming from the rollercoaster.

Turning back to the ocean, she spied a seal frolicking in the waves below. He rolled on his side, looking out of one eye, a fin in the air. Playing peek-a-boo. He rolled over and came back around to peek at her again, his whiskers twitching, making her laugh.

“It looks like I’ve got competition,” Cam said, joining her at the rail.

Lilly turned to Cam and it seemed as if the day became a little brighter. He stood beside her in plaid Bermuda shorts and a polo shirt. Sunglasses covered his eyes. Curly honey-colored hair streaked with gold fell over his forehead as he rested his forearms on the rail. He laughed, his smile a flash of white as he watched the seal play.

“He’s promised me fresh fish for lunch,” Lilly said.

“That’s one smooth seal. I’ve got a fish story of my own buddy!” Cam called out, “Take a dive!”

The seal honked and dove below the surface with a twitch of its tail.

They both laughed.

Lilly felt a little awkward—this was the first time she’d been alone with Cam. He had quite a presence.

“So, hey, it’s nice to see you again,” he said with a smile, leaning against the rail on one arm.

“Thanks. I lost my phone, otherwise I’d have confirmed.” Just a white lie. She’d lost his business card along with the phone. She remembered it said he chartered sailboats, something about sailing adventures.

“But you came anyway?” he asked.

“Yes, I came anyway.”

“Me too. I figured I’d give fate a chance.”

“So, you believe our future is predetermined?” she asked, with a tilt of her head.
