The face I’d seen when I climaxed greeted me at the door when I arrived home twenty minutes later. Only, there was no lust swimming in Victoria’s eyes. She looked frantic.

“Sadie! Thank God you’re all right.” She pulled me into a hug, and I grimaced, hoping I didn’t smell like sex and wondering what the hell she was doing still awake.

“What are you doing up? It’s two in the morning.”

“I’m perfectly aware of what time it is. You said you’d be home before you turned into a pumpkin. I’ve been worried sick.”

I’d forgotten about that, and I also hadn’t considered Victoria would worry about me.

“I didn’t want to text in case Juliet saw who the message was from,” Victoria continued, “and I didn’t want to sound like I was mothering you either.” She let go of my shoulders. “I’m glad you’re okay.”

Shame vied with glee. I didn’t know whether to hang my head or give her a bright smile. I also felt an immense sense of remorse over the reason I was late. I’d been too busy making out with someone who didn’t give a shit about me to spare a thought for someone who did.

“I was inconsiderate, and for that, I apologise.”

“Now that I can sleep easily, I’ll leave you to it.”

“Victoria.”

“Yes?” She paused, hand clutching the rail, one foot on the bottom stair.

“Thank you for caring. It feels nice.” I pulled my hair off my face and dropped it again.

Victoria’s gaze went from warm to cool in the blink of an eye. “Don’t forget what I said about workplace relationships.”

The comment was so unexpected, my head spun. “What?”

She pulled her hair back, much like I had, and ran a finger along the delicate slope of her neck. “You might want to cover that up.”

It suddenly hit me what she was getting at, and I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me. Mortified, I slapped a hand over my neck, covering what I was sure was a love bite. “I didn’t make out with Juliet.”

“My apologies for making assumptions, but I was sure that’s where you said you were going.”

“It is. I mean, I did. But she got a call and had to go out. Her flatmate was home, and…” I trailed off. Victoria could join the dots. She already had.

“I hope she’s nice.” Her smile was tight.

“It won’t happen again.”

“You’re right, it won’t. I won’t wait up, and I won’t make myself sick worrying about you. You’re a grown woman with your own mind. I’m not your keeper.”

My heart crash-landed. What had I done, and why was Victoria acting so bent out of shape? I had nothing left to lose. “Victoria.”

She met my gaze from where she stood, halfway up the spiral staircase. I did my best not to stare at her tanned thighs, peeking out from under her robe.

“I’m waiting.”

My bravado from moments before fled. I was going to ask if I would ever have a chance with her. Instead, I said, “Can you tuck me in?”

A small smile graced Victoria’s lips, making my heart flutter.
