The face Iâd seen when I climaxed greeted me at the door when I arrived home twenty minutes later. Only, there was no lust swimming in Victoriaâs eyes. She looked frantic.
âSadie! Thank God youâre all right.â She pulled me into a hug, and I grimaced, hoping I didnât smell like sex and wondering what the hell she was doing still awake.
âWhat are you doing up? Itâs two in the morning.â
âIâm perfectly aware of what time it is. You said youâd be home before you turned into a pumpkin. Iâve been worried sick.â
Iâd forgotten about that, and I also hadnât considered Victoria would worry about me.
âI didnât want to text in case Juliet saw who the message was from,â Victoria continued, âand I didnât want to sound like I was mothering you either.â She let go of my shoulders. âIâm glad youâre okay.â
Shame vied with glee. I didnât know whether to hang my head or give her a bright smile. I also felt an immense sense of remorse over the reason I was late. Iâd been too busy making out with someone who didnât give a shit about me to spare a thought for someone who did.
âI was inconsiderate, and for that, I apologise.â
âNow that I can sleep easily, Iâll leave you to it.â
âVictoria.â
âYes?â She paused, hand clutching the rail, one foot on the bottom stair.
âThank you for caring. It feels nice.â I pulled my hair off my face and dropped it again.
Victoriaâs gaze went from warm to cool in the blink of an eye. âDonât forget what I said about workplace relationships.â
The comment was so unexpected, my head spun. âWhat?â
She pulled her hair back, much like I had, and ran a finger along the delicate slope of her neck. âYou might want to cover that up.â
It suddenly hit me what she was getting at, and I wanted the floor to open up and swallow me. Mortified, I slapped a hand over my neck, covering what I was sure was a love bite. âI didnât make out with Juliet.â
âMy apologies for making assumptions, but I was sure thatâs where you said you were going.â
âIt is. I mean, I did. But she got a call and had to go out. Her flatmate was home, andâ¦â I trailed off. Victoria could join the dots. She already had.
âI hope sheâs nice.â Her smile was tight.
âIt wonât happen again.â
âYouâre right, it wonât. I wonât wait up, and I wonât make myself sick worrying about you. Youâre a grown woman with your own mind. Iâm not your keeper.â
My heart crash-landed. What had I done, and why was Victoria acting so bent out of shape? I had nothing left to lose. âVictoria.â
She met my gaze from where she stood, halfway up the spiral staircase. I did my best not to stare at her tanned thighs, peeking out from under her robe.
âIâm waiting.â
My bravado from moments before fled. I was going to ask if I would ever have a chance with her. Instead, I said, âCan you tuck me in?â
A small smile graced Victoriaâs lips, making my heart flutter.
