Chapter Twenty-Four

I took up Mrs Parker’s advice and decided to host a house warming party. I invited Anna, a few neighbours and Mrs Parker since it was her idea. I needed to gather a list of suspects and try to find out more about the previous owners of this house. Mrs Parker was nosy enough to give me more information, especially if she had a glass of wine or two. I called my parents and asked them if they would like to come, but they had dinner plans. I made sure everyone brought their own drinks while I supplied the food. As I was on the phone with the caterers, I caught sight of the house, it would be nice to invite Amelia; she had been nice to me and I had been careless for not letting her know, especially when she lived just opposite of me. I ordered extra food just in case. Her sexy son wasn’t home from what I could tell, neither was Henry. I wouldn’t go there when Henry was there. I left the house, crossed the road, and approached the door. The window of the dining room was open and I was about to lift my hand to knock when voices came.

‘Does he think he's impressing anyone by looking like a bloody faggot?’

It was Henry, and my stomach went tight. His jeep wasn’t in the driveway. His car wasn’t anywhere to be seen.

‘Henry! You can't use that word anymore!’ Amelia retorted.

‘Why the hell not? It’s the truth!’ Henry said, stern.

‘It's considered offensive and he's a good boy.’

Henry scoffed. ‘Everything is bloody offensive. Do you think when I was in the army, I went around crying like a tit because I was offended by every little thing? Those snowflakes need a kick in the arse to knock some sense into them. I have seen good men get wounded. Their bodies were blown to pieces to fight for their country. You think I care what those mindless idiots think because it hurt their sloppy feelings?’

‘This is not the army and Lucien is your son!’ Amelia reasoned.

‘Good boy, my foot. He looks like a porcelain doll. Men are not supposed to look elegant and soft. This is all your fault, you spoiled him. And he is spoiled. Going around sleeping with men and women doing whatever he likes. Becoming a model. It's a disgrace. He turned you and me into a laughingstock. It’s humiliating.’

‘He's the only child we have left.’

‘Yes, and you spoiled him rotten. Now, look what you turned him into.’

‘Turned him into what? He’s doing nothing wrong. He’s not hurting anybody,’ Amelia cried.

‘It’s about order and structure,’ Henry roared.

‘You will not be going around and bullying him. He’s not a little boy anymore. He’s a man.’

‘A man? Men don't look like princesses.’

‘Says who? Who set those rules that separate men and women?’

‘He’s too soft!’ he shouted.

Henry’s disapproval was so real it was melting through the front door as I glanced around, desperately thinking of what I should do.
