THE IMPORTANCE OF LEAVE WAS emphasized by all soldiers in their letters, and it is not surprising that the cartoonists had their own opinions on this topic. The Listening Post’s cartoon of December 1, 1917, was particularly good at mashing up the subjects of leave and shell shock, with a dazed soldier returning to the Western Front from a period of leave. He’s clearly had a good time on “vacation” in Paris or London, but it has also taken off his edge and left him vulnerable to the unending strain of the front, and he shakes with palsy and is drooling. “What’s wrong, chum, shell-shock?” asks a mate, giving him coffee to soothe his nerves. “No, back off leave,” the returnee responds.29
