In Lenox Hill, Lowrie placed her hand on Sutton’s arm, tugging him to a stop on the sidewalk. Standing at the bottom of a set of concrete steps leading up to an ornate black door, she took in the discreet sign. What was she doing here? Why was she returning to the one place she said she never would?

Because, lying in Sutton’s arms last night, after two bouts of truly exceptional lovemaking—Sutton had exceeded his promise to make it good for her—she’d thought about being back in New York City and how that made her feel. Honestly, not as bad as she’d expected.

She’d always believed that returning to the city would make her anxious, but she’d yet to feel that way. Maybe it was the fact that she was older, a little wiser and had different priorities now, but the thought of being back in the city she’d once called home didn’t send her spiraling.

And while she was feeling strong, maybe it was time to exorcise a couple of ghosts.

The sign was new: Lily Lewis Gallery. Opening hours 10:00 a.m to 6:00 p.m. She checked her watch and saw that it was five minutes after ten. She and Sutton could be in and out in thirty minutes, and her mother, who never graced the gallery before noon, would never know she was here.

She didn’t know if she’d ever paint again, but in this building were ghosts she needed to put to rest.

Biting her bottom lip, Lowrie walked up the steps, yanked open the door and stepped into the vestibule of the gallery. Taking a deep breath, she pushed through the next door and stepped into the double volume room, the low heels of her boots tapping against the laminated wood floors.

She felt Sutton’s bulk behind her and appreciated his hand on her lower back, grounding her. A terribly thin, terribly haughty woman walked over to them, dressed in black, her long hair pulled into a bun. Her mother wore brightly colored couture, but her assistants, she decreed, were to wear black.

“Can I help you?” the woman asked, looking down her rather long nose at Lowrie.

Lowrie smiled, wondering how she’d react if she told the woman that she was Lily’s daughter and the artist who’d catapulted this gallery into being one of the city’s best.

“We’d just like to look around,” Lowrie told her.

The assistant turned to Sutton, that red mouth curling into a come-to-me-baby smile. “Let me know if I can help you with anything.”

Lowrie was very sure that she would’ve gotten the cold shoulder if she’d wandered in here on her own.

After shrugging out of their coats, they draped them over their arms and Lowrie led them into the main viewing space, the center of which was dominated by a series of abstract sculptures. She recognized the work immediately. The figures were her father’s and they were stunning.

Sutton looked at the plaque with the artist’s details and sent Lowrie a look. “Your dad is incredibly talented.”

She couldn’t argue with that statement, he really was.
