Against the urging of Emma, Callie, and Charlotte, I didnât talk to Alvarez. I made it my mission to avoid him and the feelings he evoked in me to the best of my ability.
I came to work early and made sure I was long gone by the time he was done with his games. That wasnât hard, I didnât always have to stay for the games.
But the times I was unsuccessful, I could read the anger and frustration on his face. I wasnât handling this well and I knew that.
All I had to do was remember what happened when I was in high school and college to stiffen my resolve, though.
I didnât need him in my life, even if I hated not talking to him.
I should have known my luck was running out, though, when I answered my phone on Saturday after the regular season ended and the Spartans hadnât made it through the first round of playoffs.
âHey,â I answered.
âWhatâs this I hear about you not coming today?â Callie asked without greeting me.
I blinked, surprised at the hardness in her voice.
âUhâ¦â I started, not sure what to say to her.
âIf youâre not going to avoid Alvarez, get over it already. You donât have to talk to him, but I want to see you and so do Emma and Charlotte. So, get your ass dressed and Iâll be by to get you in thirty.â
Before I could say anything else, Callie hung up. I pulled my phone away from my ear and stared at its dark screen.
âWhat the heck?â I asked it, hoping it might become sentient and explain what Callie meant.
I sighed and dropped my hand. I didnât need anything to tell me what Callie meant.
She was referring to the team cookout happening today. The entire organization was invitedâincluding the office workersâand it was supposed to be the big blow out at the end of the season.
Listening to Sue talk about it, it was this awesome, family friendly experience that lasted most of the day.
Everyone came together to celebrate a season being over before we moved into off-season operations, which was mainly some of the guys coming in for workouts and meetings and me working like normal to prep for the next season with others.
I didnât want to go, though. I knew Alvarez would be there and it would be hard to avoid him, not only because he would probably try to corner me, but I knew my friends would throw me to the wolves to get me to talk to him.
Every time we met up, I got asked if weâd talked yet. Then Iâd get the look that told me I was stupid. Then theyâd look at each other with an all-knowing look.
âCrap.â
I sighed and drained the last of my coffee before standing and walking into my kitchen to rinse my mug out.
Then I dashed to my room to quickly hop in the shower and shave before pulling on my swimsuit, a coverup, and packing a bag.
Then I went to
