While the kids were growing up, we took a lot of trips that I won from oil companies. I also took the family along when I went to the National Association of Truck Stop Operators (NATSO) meetings; I was on their board.

Whenever we were on vacation, it always seemed like the kids wanted to buy a lot of junk souvenirs. Lucille and I heard a lot of “Mommy, can I have this?” and “Daddy, can I have this?” I was getting tired of their wanting to buy all this junk. I said to myself, “How do you stop that?”

Well, by the time we were ready to take our family vacation to the Grand Canyon and Disneyland, I came up with a grand plan to teach my preteen and teenage daughters the value of money. It’s always been my thinking that the quicker you’re taught to be frugal and show good stewardship with your money, the better off you are.

Before this trip, the girls had learned they needed to work hard to earn money. Lucille and I didn’t just give them anything they wanted. She and I were good examples of financial responsibility, and we didn’t make purchase decisions quickly. We were never the type of parents to buy something the girls wanted just because we could afford it. Instead, we told the girls that if they wanted something, they were welcome to spend their money on it. If they needed something important, they could come to us, and we would buy it.

My wife was good at setting up things for the girls to do around the house. They received an allowance but only if they completed their assigned chores. Then, in the summertime they used to mow our lawn and the neighbors.’ I furnished the lawnmower and gas, but they did all of the hard work. They’d show responsibility by doing things to earn a little money, so I would donate a bit to help them save up for special events.

On this vacation to the Grand Canyon and Disneyland, I was determined to drive home the value of the dollar. Lucille and I gave each of our children either twenty-five or fifty dollars, depending on their age. We told them, “Mom and Dad will take care of all of your expenses for food, lodging, and tickets. But, if you want any souvenirs, you need to use your money. You can spend it all the first day, or you can not spend any of it and have it all when you get back home. But it’s your choice; this is your money. This is your money. Do you have any problem with that?” And the overwhelming response was, “Oh no, Daddy, that’s a good deal!”

So we got into our mobile home and began our adventure. It was really a great trip because we’d travel a bit and then stay at a campground for a while. Sometimes, Mary, Cindy, and I would go out walking while Lucille, Suzi, and Nancy made the meal, although we ate out most of the time.
