CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“How did you know to come find me?” Peabo asked as he ducked under the low-hanging branches of a species of tree he didn’t recognize. He was barely keeping up with Nicole’s rapid pace.

“Something changed a couple of days ago,” she replied. “I sensed you in a much stronger way than I had since leaving you behind. I’m guessing there’s something about the Sage’s Tower or its surroundings that made our connection, I don’t know how to describe it, but it made the connection dimmer. I could still sense you, but the connection was weak—very weak. And then all of a sudden it was like I could feel you on the other side of the room again. That’s when I knew something significant had happened.”

“I wonder if it had to do with whatever they have around the perimeter of that place that they tried to trap me with.”

“Did they put a collar on you?” Nicole looked over her shoulder and shuddered. “I should have known. I hated that thing.”

Peabo chuckled. “Yup, not a fan either. I’d give it and the entire tower complex zero stars on its Yelp review if I could.”

“Yelp review? Is that something I’m supposed to understand?”

He grinned. “No, it’s just a bad joke from my world.”

Nicole bumped her shoulder against his. “Your previous world. Need I remind you that this is now your world and you’re stuck with it—and me.”

Peabo wrapped his arm around Nicole’s waist and gave it a light squeeze. He pointed north at the mountains, which were looming ever larger. “How long until we start heading underground?”

“If we continue through the night, we should get there before dawn—”

A sudden shriek from behind pierced the quiet of the late afternoon. Peabo and Nicole both spun around. Several hundred feet in the air—and aiming directly for them—was what looked like a dragon with a scorpion’s tail. If he recalled the monster manual correctly, it was called a wyvern.

Nicole yanked at Peabo’s arm. “We have to run! We need to get under the cover of the trees or we’re dead!”

They ran together at top speed, but the trees were nearly a half mile away. The cat leapt ahead of them easily, but Nicole and Peabo had to plow through heavy undergrowth, Nicole slashing at it with a machete-like knife.

“Nicole,” Peabo said, “there’s no way we’ll make the trees before it catches us.”

He skidded to a stop, ignoring Nicole’s yelled warnings. Instead he focused on the incoming wyvern, which was closing fast.

He stretched his arm out toward it and released the energy he’d been holding. Electricity arced at the tips of his fingers, forming a small ball of crackling energy that elongated and then streaked directly toward the incoming creature.

The wyvern let out a shriek as the light slammed into it. Its movements faltered, and it began tumbling toward the ground. The earth shuddered with the impact as it struck. One wing was bent at an odd angle and had smoke coming from it.

The thing could no longer fly, but it wasn’t dead.
