Chapter 27

The men sitting in the Oval Office paused, glancing at one another, until Kellerman restarted the conversation. "Captain, with this new intel, we still need to work out details on this end, but this is what I've put together so far. An FBI SWAT Team and two special agents from the Resident Agency in Brooklyn-Queens will be assigned to the operation. They'll be at the airport ready to follow you, covertly, of course. They will also see to it that you are passed through customs. Agents will be on the train to D.C."

A protection detail? That's a first! Grant thought. "Sir, no disrespect, but is that really necessary? Our plan was for Joe to cover our backs."

"Captain, as you probably know, Brighton Beach has been a 'hot spot' for not only the Russian Mob, but for every day Russian criminals, many of whom came illegally into this country. Don't take for granted that just because they believe you to be from the GRU that they won't be very wary of you and Mr. Kalinin. They've never thought twice about killing one or more of their own.

"Also, keep in mind that the Brighton Beach Russians don't report to Moscow. It's completely independent of it. It's its own criminal organization. To be truthful, we still have to figure out how they got involved, and why Moscow didn't send the weapons through diplomatic channels. But Director Simmons and I believe we're close to answering that."

"I understand all that, sir, but I'd still like Joe to work with the FBI. I hope you understand, Mr. Director."

Even though it was pretty much Kellerman's call, he looked toward Carr and Simmons who signaled their approval. "All right. I'll make arrangements that will coincide with Director Simmons' plans. He's been making notes, so I'll turn this over to him."

Grant quickly began, "Sir, before we start that conversation, Matt and Rob have been waiting in the Gulfstream since we left. I haven't spoken with them since. My thought is that they can fly Joe to New York and be there well ahead of our flight's arrival. That'll give Joe a chance to meet with the FBI agents. And if you want, they can also take the assets and the CIA agents, that is, if the assets make the decision to leave."

"Not necessary. We have an aircraft on stand-by for that trip."

Kellerman spoke up. "Captain, I'll get the names of the agents then will work out details for Lieutenant Adler meeting them. They'll call you at the consulate, and well before you leave for Marseille airport."

"Really appreciate that, sir."

"As for your flight," Simmons said, "CIA and State will work with Marseille officials and air marshals getting you and Mr. Kalinin into the terminal without going through security. We'll arrange to have a 'special' employee at the ticket counter. He'll swap out the passports with ones having yours and Mr. Kalinin's photos. Everything in them will be exactly the same, except for the photos.

"We went ahead and investigated flights. The earliest you can get out is tomorrow morning at 1035 on Delta.
