How typical, Amina thought, how typical of her father to be lyrical while he distanced himself. He was trying to force her hand, to tell her to step in and take care of Omar herself, to be the caretaker Mo had just lost, to give Omar a heritage she herself did not possess. Her father was asking, without saying it straight out, that she not move to India.

That Omar was desperately unhappy was clear. His grades had dropped steadily throughout the year; he was still isolated; his mother didn’t work less for being separated from Mo. What could Amina do? He had two parents, after all.

But she had a bad feeling in her stomach. It was the letter; she balled it up and threw it across the room. She was her father’s daughter, after all. She would leave. And someday when she was old would she say, I had a brother, once, I had a nephew that I adored, but that is the past?

The phone rang, startling her. It was Matt. He and Natalie had arrived in town, and could Amina meet them for drinks Sunday evening at a Greek place downtown? She said she could, because she was caught off guard, and then she regretted it.

She poured some more wine, and then some more, and then she went to bed without eating.
