Hugh and Ranulf were hardly surprised by John’s reaction to the news they had to impart on their return to Westminster, but that did not make it any easier to bear. As John’s rage reached the point at which it seemed that he might expire from the sheer effort of ranting, swearing, jumping up and down and kicking items of furniture, they began to fear for their own lives.

‘What did you do to prevail upon the traitor to return?’ he bellowed.

‘We delivered your threat to dispossess him of all his estates, sire,’ Ranulf confirmed, in as calm a tone as he could manage.

‘And?’ John demanded. ‘What was his response?’

Sensing that silence was worse than the truth at this precise moment, Hugh added, ‘That the estates are his wife’s, sire.’

‘Not for a single day longer!’ John screamed. ‘Lose no time in entering Pembroke with as many men as you can muster, and tell the whore that she is now destitute, and that her arrogant husband is under attainder for treason if he ever again sets one foot on English soil. Do it, and do it now! Be gone, before I change my mind regarding your loyalties!’

Outside the chamber they heaved sighs of relief, then turned to look at each other.

‘Do we do what he demands?’ Hugh asked.

‘Will we pay with our heads if we don’t?’ Ranulf replied with his arms spread wide in a gesture of helplessness.

Hugh gave a responding shrug and asked about the best route to take to Pembroke. ‘I’ve never been any closer to Wales than my own estate in Flint,’ he admitted.

Ranulf nodded. ‘Then allow me to be your guide. Then we might journey back to Cheshire by way of the Welsh Marches. By this means we can visit our families, and hopefully you can give Geoffrey the glad tidings regarding his courtly education on the Chester estate.’
