I thought that would be the only taste of London I’d get, but not so. I was soon back in the capital, and flying down no less. This time I was doing a kids TV show with The Lightning Seeds at the famous Pinewood Studios, though funnily enough I remember very little about being there. I remember listening to The Cure’s ‘Friday I’m in Love’ on the way down there a lot more than the shoot itself, though I do recall being flown back to Liverpool and, in great contrast, spending much of the same afternoon sitting in Kieran and Dave’s full-size tepee which had been erected in our allotment so Dave could waterproof it.

Then Paul reappeared and generously set up a recording session at Spirit Studio in Manchester (where we recorded ‘Underworld’ and ‘Around the World in a Haizy Daze’). Then it was off to do a TV appearance and a trip to Ebbw Vale in Wales to do a further TV show with The Lightning Seeds. It was another memorable experience, travelling over the moon-style landscape and listening to The Modern Lovers’ songs ‘Astral Plane’ and ‘Pablo Picasso’.

The exciting times we’d been experiencing continued on our return to Liverpool. David Evans got in touch and asked me if The Onset would like to support Jonathan Richman when he played the Citadel in St Helens. Was the Pope Polish? Yes, of course we’d be over the moon to support Jonathan.

While we were waiting for the St Helens show to come around we played another show with Half Man Half Biscuit, this time at the Derby Wherehouse, where the show was videoed by a TV company. The Biscuits’ set would later be released as a live concert on VHS by Probe Plus. Our set was really good that night, especially ‘Down at the Space Rocketry’ and ‘Spoonful’, the old Willie Dixon blues number we’d been featuring for the past twelve months or so.

We were already vibed up about the St Helens gig with Jonathan Richman when things got even better. David Evans called again, this time to ask if we’d like to take Jonathan to Glastonbury, as his next show after St Helens was the festival. And from Glastonbury could we then take him on to London? It was magnificent and he’d even pay all our expenses too! I figured that if we were taking him to Glastonbury the following day, he may as well stay at our flat in Aigburth the night after the show at the St Helens Citadel as we would have to be getting off early the following morning.

The St Helens gig took place on 27 June 1992. We did a good sound check and Bernie was now playing double bass on some of the songs, like ‘Precious Love’, which gave the band a new dimension.

Jonathan turned up a little later and I explained my plan about him staying at our flat because of the early date in the morning. He was very enthusiastic about the idea and proved to be great fun to be around.
