CHAPTER XXIII
THE delight of Molly Ash knew no bounds. She grew more familiar, with the voice of Seton constantly warning her. But she insisted on patting the shining neck of the gelding, and slapping his shoulder, and speaking little foolish phrases. And Blood and Bones most manifestly liked it! That was the amazing part of the affair.
âI want to ride him, some day, if youâll let me, Jimmy!â she declared.
âYou let me hold the reins while youâre on,â said Seton, âand you can ride him.â
âNo, all by myself,â she insisted.
âOh, sheâll do it,â said Henry Ash. âThereâs a wild, stubborn streak in my girl. When it comes up to the surface, sheâs pretty well bound to have her own way. Oh, sheâll ride Blood and Bones, one of these days.â
Douglas Walters laughed loudly, but Seton did not laugh at all. Instead, he looked earnestly, quietly, into the girlâs face. He was seeing in it something that he had not guessed at beforeâand this was the strength of which her father spoke. Yes, she was not all softness and half childish gentleness. There was a womanâs strength in her, besides; and perhaps, if the strain came, a strength like a manâs as well.
Then he rode off with Doug Walters toward the corral.
âWell, you made your grandstand,â said Walters, sourly.
âWhatâs the matter, Doug,â said Seton. âAre you afraid that Iâll get too friendly with the Ash family?â
âI saw your line,â said Walters, more bitterly still. âYou wanted to make me out the big overbearing brute and horse torturer. That was it.â
âYou talk like a baby,â said Seton. âYou played that hand yourself and invited me to sit in on the cut.â
Walters made no reply. His jaw was set like a rock.
âAnother thing, Doug,â said Seton.
âGo on, then.â
âIâve just heard that Hookerâs changed his mind.â
âChanged his mind? About what? He never changes his mind.â
âYouâre wrong. Heâs changed his mind.â
âYou mean about the ranch, here?â
âYes.â
âThe short loans?â
âYes, thatâs what I mean.â
âYouâre a fool!â said Walters. âWhoever told you that was making a fool of you. Why, Hookerâs getting ready to take over the whole caboodle.â
Seton shook his head.
âHe wonât.â
âWho told you that?â
âHe did.â
Walters gasped. He literally was agape.
âYou mean that you went in and saw him?â
âYes.â
âBy the Lord!â breathed Walters.
His amazement still mastered him.
âWho the devil are you, Seton?â he asked.
âIâm Jim Seton.â
âYouâre the devil, you mean, if you could dent Hooker. You mean that youâre the devil himself.â
âNo, Doug. Iâm simply an honest man, or reasonably so, I hope.â
âDamn the Sunday school rot!â said Walters. âTalk sense to me. You mean that Hooker actually is giving more time?â
âYes. I mean that.â
âHe told you so his own self?â
âThatâs what I mean.â
âThe skyâs gonna drop on me in another minute,â gasped Walters. âYouâll be telling me that he wants to give us some more loans, in a little while.â
âThatâs what I mean to say, too.â
âHey?â
âYes, thatâs what I mean to say.â
âNow, Jimmy, itâs a fool line of talk that youâre throwing my way. We couldnât get another bean out of him if we fell on our knees in a row.
