Chapter Seventeen
Wolf stood in the doorway, hesitating. Torn between entering the room—or turning around and going back downstairs. Peyton was curled up in the middle of the bed, her back to him, her breathing deep and even. Asleep? Maybe—except for the barest stiffening of her shoulders that he'd noticed when he first stopped in the doorway.
If she was feigning sleep, that meant she wanted to be left alone. Hell, not like he could blame her. She'd had a lot dumped on her in a very short amount of time—
And he was about to dump even more on her.
But not yet. Let her rest. Whether she was actually sleeping or not, it was obvious she wanted to be left alone. It didn't take a genius to figure that out. And it wasn't like he didn't understand—he did. Given a choice, he'd rather be alone himself. He wasn't a loner, not like Chaos, but there was nothing wrong with a little quiet time.
Except he knew there was more to it than that, at least for himself. Somehow alone had morphed into loneliness, and there was a definite difference between the two.
He had no idea when it had happened, or even why. He was the smartass of the crowd. The joker. Serious when he needed to be—which was too damn often sometimes—but always ready to lighten the mood when the situation called for it.
Lately, though, something had changed. Hell, for all he knew, it had always been this way and he was only just now realizing it.
Or maybe his mind had gone into hyperdrive and he was just picking up on Peyton's mood and reading too damn much into everything else.
Yeah, that was probably it. Nothing some television wouldn't cure.
He backed out of the room, ready to pull the door closed and give Peyton some privacy when she sighed. The breathy sound was louder than a whisper, heavy with regret and resignation.
"I'm not sleeping."
Wolf paused with his hand on the knob. Her voice held no hint about her mood and he had no idea if she wanted company or not. Should he head downstairs and leave her alone? If he was smart, he'd do exactly that.
Except he wasn't feeling particularly smart at the moment.
He entered the room and moved closer to the bed, thought about sitting on the edge then decided it would be better if he stood. Peyton rolled over and pushed to a sitting position, drew her knees into her chest and wrapped her arms around them. Her gaze was carefully blank when it met his, almost like she wasn't quite sure how much to show him.
Fair enough. She wasn't the only one who could hide what she was thinking and feeling.
"You okay?"
"Yeah. Fine."
It was a lie, of course. Exactly what the stupid-ass question deserved. How many times in the last twenty-four hours had he asked her that same question?
You were almost trampled to death. Are you okay?
Your aunt was murdered. Are you okay?
You just learned your aunt might have deliberately tried to have you stomped to death.
