Chapter Ten
With the three lawmen dismissing him from their thoughts and moving away to deal with the newcomer, Lincoln set about trying to take advantage of the distraction. Scrambling sounds could also be heard, suggesting that Blythe had also concluded that this was a good time to get to safety.
Lincoln flexed his hands one at a time, ensured he had a strong grip of the rope and then tugged. He still failed to drag it forward and, worse, after all his efforts he reckoned the rope had less slack between his hands and his ankle than before.
He examined the length of rope ahead more closely and confirmed that he had been right and it was inching away from him. He presumed that Blythe was in trouble and dropping down farther, and a few moments later he got proof of this when he was yanked upward until he was standing.
He then had to take a pace forward to keep his balance after which he managed to steady himself. He turned his head and found that their three guards were facing away from him, their truculent postures suggesting that they would be occupied with dealing with the newcomer for a while longer, so he decided to try a different tactic.
Rather than straining to keep himself as far from the edge as possible, he moved sideways. The rope remained in the notch and when he reached the edge for the first time he got a clear understanding of Blytheâs situation.
Lincoln groaned, having been wrong about what Blythe was doing. He wasnât attempting to complete a desperate scramble back to the top. Instead he was seeking to work his way down the sheer drop.
Even if the rope wasnât securing him to Lincoln, he was still too high to survive falling the rest of the way down without injury. Then again he was a desperate man facing serious charges and this might be his only chance to escape.
Blythe noticed Lincoln above him and stopped trying to extend a leg to reach a lower foothold so that he could nod to him and then to the ground with an obvious invitation for Lincoln to join him. Lincoln didnât dignify the request with a response, but then the lawmen stepped back to allow the newcomer to ride into the site, further reducing the possibility that Blythe would have enough time to sneak away.
To Lincolnâs surprise the rider was Kent. He was smiling at Nevada, although when he noticed Lincolnâs situation he jerked upright in the saddle and drew back on the reins in surprise.
âI know who you are,â Nevada said. âI donât know why you followed us.â
âI have important information about Marshal Hawk,â Kent said as he dismounted.
âThen go back to Willow Falls and tell it to Sheriff Chitwood.â
Kent sighed and he took a moment to reply. âI thought it was more important that you heard it first.â
Nevada snorted with apparent skepticism about the possibility that Kentâs information would change anything. Sadly, Lincoln agreed with him, reckoning
