He turned to lead them up.

“Are you coming, Clare?” Fred asked.

“No, thank you,” she replied in her most sickeningly sweet tones. “I wouldn’t pay much attention to ship’s business.”

Fred’s eyes twinkled when he led Meghal up. Clare drew Ananya toward the bow where an open area had been supplied with chairs nailed to the deck. Open views and unobstructed sea breeze made it Clare’s favorite part of the ship. The breeze eased the stifling heat of the Bay of Bengal, which seemed to increase the closer they got to Ceylon.

Two women who had been sitting there left when Clare and Ananya arrived.

“Excellent,” she said, just loud enough for the departing women to hear. “We have our choice of seats, Ananya. Shall we read stories for a while?”

Fred had billed himself as a recently remarried widower gaining the sympathy of the dozen or so ladies among their fellow passengers. Some, like the two that left, avoided Clare and the girls. Others, like the captain, seemed to believe her care for half-caste children made her some sort of martyr. She despised both attitudes and suspected Fred did as well, amusing himself at the others’ expense. She was happy to see the back of them.

They read until Ananya nodded off, sea air and exercise having done their work. With the little one safely curled up on a chair, Clare took advantage of the opportunity to walk closer to the front. With both hands on the railing, she closed her eyes and tipped her head back, enjoying the feel of the wind in her hair. She tried to picture her cottage—the one with a little piece of land to grow herbs—in her mind, plans rolling through her head. As soon as I reach London—
