He was just like her father. Mick Maguire had been charismatic, passionate, and full of love, but when he drank, he was destructive. His binges were like tornados, destroying everything in their path, leaving only bits and pieces of his familyâs life behind, to be rebuilt from scratch. To escape her father, sheâd married a man she thought was different.
Brian was self-controlled, cautious, and cold. But his controlling behavior had been just as damaging as her fatherâs drinking. He had the same ability as her father to tear her fragile, battered ego to shreds. Brian just used different tactics. His weapon was language. It was why he was a brilliant lawyer.
Which was worse? Hard to say. The result had been the same: her heart left in tiny, broken shards, which sheâd worked hard to piece back together. Could she risk going through that again?
Maybe she shouldâve listened to her initial gut feeling that they would never work. Who had she been kidding? They were too differentâtheir ages now seemed insignificant compared to their views on life and their backgrounds. But heâs not my father. Heâs clean. And although theyâd had their problems, heâd never treated her with anything but respectâunlike Brian. He loves me.
The sad fact was, she was falling in love with him, too. Still, her mind told her she had to let him go for her own self-preservation.
But her heart disagreed and begged her to fight for him.
Maggie heard the bedroom door open and felt the bed dip with his weight.
âPlease. I want to be alone. Just go away.â She buried her damp face in her arm.
âWould you at least look at me when you tell me to leave? Really, truly look at me?â
Rolling over, she took in his red-rimmed eyes. He brushed away her tears with the back of his fingers. He broke eye contact, and his throat bobbled.
âI canât do this. Iâm not strong enough.â She held onto the hand stroking her cheek and his beautiful face blurred. Looking at him, her mind wavered in favor of her heart. He looked as devastated as she felt.
âI disagree. Youâre the strongest woman I know.â His brow furrowed as he appeared to struggle with his thoughts. âIâll leave if you tell me to. But I donât want to. I want to try to make this work. I meant what I said the other night; I love you.â
âYouâre too young to know what love isââ
âBullshit. Thatâs fuckinâ bullshit, Maggie. Donât pull the age card on me and think you can win with that argument. I may be stupid, but I know my own heart. And that heart belongs to you.â He held up a hand. âI know. I know my language sucks. Sorryâ¦
âWhen I fell off the ladder, it was the strangest feeling. It was like an analogy of my life. Iâve been free falling since I was ten and headed for disaster. Itâs exciting, but scary as shit. You know how you buffered my fall the other night? Well, meeting you has provided me a soft cushion for all this pain inside me.
