not exist in the Soviet Union. In fact, there was a sense in which the period in jail would actually help him to go on killing with impunity. He had been arrested, checked and then released. It was the nearest to a clean bill of health that he could possibly have hoped for.
Nor did the conviction seem to harm his work prospects. The job he got was only as a simple engineer. For a former head of the supply department, it was a bit of a comedown. But it was better than nothing. There was regular pay and his family had something to live on. Like everything else in life, he managed to blame his prison term on the unfairness of his bosses.
Even Fajdna agreed. Often her husband's constant moaning about other people got on her nerves, but this time he seemed to have a point. She remembered how unhelpful they had been when she went to the factory in Shakhti to try and get them to drop the charges. Naturally, though, Chikatilo never told his wife the real reason police had held him so long, namely, that they suspected him not just of theft but also of the murder of Dima Ptashnikov.
For more than six months after his release, Chikatilo did not commit a single murder. When psychiatrists were to insist years later that he was sane, this \ pause was a powerful piece of evidence on their side. I The very fact that Chikatilo was able to stop killing, I apparently at will, seemed to confirm that he was no J crazed psychopath unable to control his basic urges. 1 Self-preservation required him to bide his time, so he " acted accordingly. However deep his urge—or even need—to kill, he could exercise a conscious choice as to both the time and place in which he satisfied it. They saw him as a calculating killer, who planned his attacks hours and maybe even days in advance, selecting the precise point to which he would lead his unfortunate victims.
