Azureâs eyes shot up to meet the elfâs, and he worried that he was being a bit too hopeful. âIs thisâ¦for me?â Even asking it made him feel stupid. Of course, Jin would not give him something so valuable when he could just learn the spell himself.
The elfâs head bobbed slowly, and a smile spread across his lips.
âWow! Thank you,â Azure fumbled over the words.
Feeling overwhelmed with gratitude, he thought it would only be right to give something of value in exchange. Placing the Spell Scroll on the bed, he rummaged in his Worn Leather Backpack for the Length of Osage Orange and the recipe that he had purchased earlier in the day. Walking the items over, he placed them both in Jinâs hands.
âWhatâs this?â the elf asked.
âItâs the schematics and wood for a bow. I know it doesnât compare to the gift you gave me, but you can have it.â
Jinâs smile softened, and he looked up at Azure before offering the items back. âWhile itâs very thoughtful, I cannot use these.â
âWhy not?â He gave the elf a puzzled look.
âBecause the requirement for the recipe is level 40 in Woodworking.â
Azureâs expression flatlined as he realized heâd gotten swindled. Even the merchants in The Deathlands were tricky and ruthless. That was a lesson heâd have to take with him going forward.
âI canât use this either,â Azure realized, his frown only deepening as he gazed down at the open spell scroll, though he barely saw it. His mind was still on the merchant and about how he planned to go give her a piece of his mind in the morning.
âWhy not?â Now Jin was the one looking puzzled.
Azure placed the Length of Osage Orange and the recipe back into his Worn Leather Backpack while he spoke. âBecause I never learned air magic. I donât know how to absorb the spell.â
âI can teach you,â the elf told him, catching Azure by surprise.
âYou can?â
âYes.â Jin nodded. âTo be honest, most of what they teach in Magic School is theatrics. All you need to learn a spell is to have that element in your presence.â
âHow do you know this if you donât use magic?â Azure asked, then recognized it was a stupid question. The elf was hundreds of years old. He knew more than Azure could even fathom.
âDid Uden ever go to Magic School to learn how to imbue arrows?â came the reply.
Azure hesitated, thinking about it. âWellâ¦no.â
âNext time we are outside the city, we will stop somewhere so you can learn the spell.â
And with that, the conversation was dropped.
